Early Deficit Too Much To Overcome at Pomona In 3-2 Loss

Otters drop second consecutive 1-goal decision to a nationally-ranked team

POMONA, Calif — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team proved once again it deserves to be mentioned amongst the top teams in the nation Sunday afternoon after going toe-to-toe with No. 13 Cal Poly Pomona in a tough 3–2 loss at Kellogg Stadium.

With Sunday's match, CSUMB finished a gauntlet of playing three Top 15 ranked teams in an 8–day span on the road. The Otters tied No. 7 Cal State Dominguez Hills 2–2 last Saturday in Carson and lost 1–0 to No. 1 Cal State L.A. Friday night in Los Angeles.

Sunday, the Otters started on their heels, conceding three goals in the first 10 minutes before taking control of the match. After the early barrage, the Otters out–shot the Broncos 10–9 over the final 80 minutes, putting Pomona on its heels while forcing Bronco goalkeeper CJ Walker to make a career–high five saves.

The Otters got one goal back in the 20th minute when Roberto Banegas (Marina HS/MPC)  drew a penalty and Miguel Guerrero (Redwood City/Sequoia HS) converted from the spot. Banegas took matters into his own hands in the waning moments of the first half, making a daring 30 yard carry from his side of midfield before finishing with a clinical strike from outside of the box out to make it a 1–goal game.

Having weathered the storm, the Broncos regained a measure of control after intermission and the teams played to a standstill over the final 45 minutes.

The Otters return home from their 3–game trip through the Top 25 to host in-form Cal State San Bernardino Friday in Cardinale Stadium. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
