Otters Come Up Just Short At No. 1 Cal State L.A.

Second half marker gives the Golden Eagles a 1-0 win

LOS ANGELES — Cal State Monterey Bay came ever so close to earning a share of the spoils, but top-ranked Cal State L.A. did just enough to hang on for a 1–0 victory Friday evening at Jesse Owens Stadium.

The Golden Eagles claimed the lone goal when Daniel Garcia finished a Marlon Radel flick in the 54th minute. From there, L.A. goalkeeper Alvaro Unanua made seven saves to ensure that goal would be enough.

CSUMB won the rest of the stat sheet, out–shooting L.A. 14–11 while putting seven balls on target to just four for the Golden Eagles. CSUMB also posted seven corners to four for L.A.

The Otters nearly created a tying goal from nothing in the waning moments when Mason Ward (Temecula Valley HS) turned a Jordan Sime (Pasadena HS) steal near midfield into a golden opportunity. Ward fed Javier Romero (San Francisco/Marshall HS) streaking into the box.

Romero found Janos Kömmerling (Dusseldorf, Germany) across the box, and the sophomore striker created enough space for himself to launch the potential tying shot, but Unanua dove low to his left to deny the match's final scoring chance with 20 seconds remaining.

The Otters will remain in Southern California to play their third consecutive nationally–ranked opponent when they visit No. 13 Cal Poly Pomona Sunday at Kellogg Stadium.
