McManus Nets Last Gasp Match Winner At Dominguez Hills

Amelia McManus scores with 30 second left in regulation to lift MB to 2-1 victory

CARSON, Calif. — Sophomore Amelia McManus (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS) scored her second goal of the match in the dying seconds to lift Cal State Monterey Bay to a 2–1 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday afternoon at Dignity Health Sports Park Field 3.

Although it was a match-up of CCAA opponents, it goes down as the final nonconference match of the season for both sides. They will meet again in a conference affair to close the regular season October 27 at Cardinale Stadium.

McManus gave the Otters the lead in the 73rd minute when she finished a tic-tac-toe series of passes that began with Mitsy Ramirez (Richmond/UC Colorado Springs) in the center circle and finished with McManus slotting one past a hard–charging Alyssa Newsom from the top of the box. Freshmen Tiger Rendon (Fresno/Central HS) and Jazmine Casteneda (Aptos HS) earned the assists.

It took the Toros less than eight minutes to equalize when a left-footed cross from Lexi Howard fell to Julia Burdick on the doorstep for an easy score.

But Ramirez worked her magic again with the match on the line, freeing Elizabeth Kobrine (Irvine/Northwood HS) outside the right post for a short pass across the goalline to McManus for the tap-in winner 30 seconds from time.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Amelia McManus tapped home a short cross from Elizabeth Kobrine with 30 seconds remaining in regulation.

THE END OF THE BEGINNING… Saturday's match marked the end of preconference play for the Otter women's soccer team, who improved to 3–2–2 overall. The Otters are 13–2–5 in their last 20 non–CCAA games dating back to the 2018 season.

MULTI–McMANUS… Saturday's match marks the second time in 22 collegiate appearances that Amelia McManus recorded multiple goals. She also had a hat trick in a win over Holy Names as a freshman in 2021.

GIVING IS A TEAM AFFAIR… Jazmine Casteneda, Elizabeth Kobrine and Mitsy Ramirez all posted their first assists of 2022 in Saturday's 2–1 win at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Through the first seven games this season, 10 different Otter players have earned at least one assist.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Amelia McManus 2; ASSISTS: Jazmine Casteneda/Elizabeth Kobrine/Mitsy Ramirez/Tiger Rendon 1; POINTS: Amelia McManus 4; SHOTS: Amelia McManus 3; SAVES: Maleni Morales 2.

THE LAST WORD… "This win on the road was a great final test before we start conference play next week. In the past, we have had a tough time winning these games. Our belief in ourselves combined with our depth enabled us to pull off a deserved win." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will conclude their 5–match roadtrip when they open CCAA play with a pair of matches in the Los Angeles area next weekend. The action kicks off Friday (Sept. 23) at Cal State L.A.
