Otters Earn Draw At No. 7 Cal State Dominguez Hills

Goals from Javier Romero, Roberto Banegas lead to 2-2 tie

CARSON, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay got goals midway through both haves from Javier Romero (San Francisco/Marshall HS) and Roberto Banegas (Marina HS/MPC) to earn a draw with No. 7 Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday afternoon at Dignity Health Sports Park Field 3.

Although it was a match between CCAA foes, it was the final nonconference affair for both teams. The draw evened CSUMB's record at 2–2–2 overall. Dominguez Hills dipped to 6–0–1.
Romero gave the Otters the early advantage against the run of play when he chested down a ball over the top from Garrett Hayes (El Toro HS/Irvine Valley College), spied Toro keeper Sebastian Ascencio off his line, then brilliantly half-volleyed a shot just under the bar in the 24th minute.

Dominguez rallied for a pair of unanswered goals. The Toros scored late in the first half when Sulaiman Bah cleaned up the trash after the Otter defense misplayed a long kick out of the box from Ascencio. Martin Valasquez gave them the lead in the 71st minute when he finished some nice prep work from Kenny Lee by deflecting a shot in off an Otter defender.
But Banegas earned the Otters a share of the spoils less than six minutes later when he played tic-tac-toe with Janos Kömmerling (Dusseldorf, Germany) and Miguel Guerrero (Redwood City/Sequoia HS) for a goalline tap-in.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Hugo Vargas-Rios cleared a last ditch Toro effort from the top of the box with 10 seconds remaining.

GIANT KILLERS… For the second time this season, the Otters earned a result on the road against a nationally–ranked opponent with Saturday's 2–2 draw at No. 7 Cal State Dominguez Hills. On Aug. 26, CSUMB beat (then) No. 20 Colorado School of Mines 2–1 in Golden, Colo. CSUMB is now 1–1–3 all–time against nationally–ranked opponents under Head Coach Graeme Jaap.

THIS BOY IS ON FIRE… Roberto Banegas is making the most of his first and only season in an Otter uniform. He now has scored points in five of CSUMB's first six games this season, leading the team with four goals and one assist for 10 points.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Javier Romero scored his first goal of 2022 (second collegiate goal) in Saturday 2–2 draw at Cal State Dominguez Hills. He is the fifth different Otter to score in the first six matches this season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Roberto Banegas/Javier Romero 1; ASSISTS: Garrett Hayes/Janos Kömmerling 1; POINTS: Roberto Banegas 2; SHOTS: Miguel Guerrero 4; SAVES: Matthias Milton 4.

THE LAST WORD… "We are really happy with today's performance, especially the second half one. We knew it was going to be a tough game against a national–ranked Dominguez team. The guys kept pushing and never gave up, even when we went a goal behind. We're looking forward to another tough trip next week to L.A." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will conclude their 3–match roadtrip when they open CCAA play with a pair of matches in the Los Angeles area next weekend. The action kicks off Friday (Sept. 23) at Cal State L.A.
