Otters Ride Four First Half Goals To 4–1 Win Over Hawaii–Hilo

Roberto Banegas scores twice; Mason Ward, Miguel Guerrero add markers

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay conceded an early goal before exploding for four scores in the first half to defeat visiting Hawaii–Hilo 4–1 Monday evening at the Otter Sports Complex.

Senior forward Roberto Banegas (Marina HS/MPC) scored his second and third of the season to lead the deluge. Freshman Mason Ward (Temecula Valley HS) and senior Miguel Guerrero (Redwood City/Sequoia HS) added CSUMB's other markers as the Otters evened their record at 2–2–1. Hawaii–Hilo fell to 1–2–0 with the loss.

Things looked promising for the visiting Vulcans early when Tom Vorkastner's ball in the box found the head Alexander Hernandez–Herbach for a tap-in goal in the fourth minute. It was all CSUMB from that point, however, as the Otters scored four times in less than 23 minutes to put the match on ice.

Ward's goal opened the floodgates when he ran onto a perfect through ball from Javier Romero (San Francisco/Marshall HS) in the 20th minute. Banegas headed home his first of the night after some beautiful set-up work from Janos Kömmerling (Dusseldorf, Germany) just past the half hour.

Banegas completed his brace following a daring run from Colin O'Mahony (Cork, Ireland) and Guerrero capped the scoreline less than a minute later off a short pass from Hugo Vargas-Rios (Pajaro Valley HS/Cabrillo College).

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Roberto Banegas scored his second goal in the 41st minute to give the Otters a 3–1 lead. Hilo would not put another ball on frame all night.

BRACE YOURSELF… The brace by Roberto Banegas was the first of his collegiate career and the first by an Otter this season. The last Otter to turn the trick was Julian Contreras, who scored twice in the 2021 season finale win at Cal State Dominguez Hills (Nov. 4).

DON'T BLINK, YOU'LL MISS IT… The second goal by Roberto Banegas (41:04) and the goal by Miguel Guerrero (41:57) came just 53 seconds apart. They're the second fastest consecutive goals scored by the Otters on record and the fastest since Adrian Rebollar and Walmer Martinez scored 30 seconds apart in a 7–0 win over Stanislaus State in 2019.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Roberto Banegas 2; ASSISTS: Janos Kömmerling/Colin O'Mahony/Javier Romero/Hugo Vargas-Rios 1; POINTS: Roberto Banegas 4; SHOTS: Miguel Guerrero 3; SAVES: None.

THE LAST WORD… "The guys were very eager to get back at it after the last game. We were a little disappointed to go one goal down after creating two very good chances in first half. To the guys' credit, they kept playing and played some really good soccer in last 15 minutes of first half and scored some very good goals. We are excited about our next run of games against some of the top teams in the nation. These are the games the guys want to play in." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play a nonconference match at Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday afternoon as part of a men's/women's doubleheader. The men's match will kickoff at 3 p.m.
