Otters Close Trip With Draw At Western Oregon

Nayeli Sandoval Gallo scores her second goal in 1-1 draw

MONMOUTH, Ore. — Cal State Monterey Bay got a goal just past the hour from senior Nayeli Sandoval Gallo (Bloomington HS/San Bernardino Valley College) to earn a share of the spoils in a 1–1 draw with Western Oregon Sunday afternoon on the WOU Soccer Field.

Sandoval Gallo recorded her second marker of the season by finishing a feed from Catalina Villegas (Clovis HS/UNLV) in the 65th minute. That offset Leeci Snyder's opener for the Wolves midway through the first half.

WOU out–shot the Otters 13–6 for the match with CSUMB holding a 4–1 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Maleni Morales (Mission San Jose HS/Las Positas College) made three saves while earning her second tie of 2022.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Maleni Morales saved a Leeci Snyder effort 37 seconds from time. It was the last attempt by either team.

TIED AT THE TOP… With her goal Sunday at Western Oregon, Nayeli Sandoval Gallo tied Jasmine Safarians atop the Otter scoring short with five total points (they each have two goals and one assist).

VILLEGAS LENDS A HAND… Catalina Villegas assisted on Sunday's goal by Nayeli Sandoval Gallo, giving her two assists for the season. She is the first Otter with two helpers in 2022. Six Otters have one assist apiece.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Nayeli Sandoval Gallo 1; ASSISTS: Catalina Villegas 1; POINTS: Nayeli Sandoval Gallo 2; SHOTS: Six Otters 1; SAVES: Maleni Morales 3.

THE LAST WORD… "Our energy on the road today was tremendous. WOU was a physical and direct team and, while our style is generally more possession based, we matched the physicality well. This mentality will serve us well in conference." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play at Cal State Dominguez Hills in a nonconference match Saturday (September 17) in Carson. Kickoff will be at 12:30 p.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
