Sandoval Gallo Nets Match–Winner As Otters Blank Dominican

72nd minute strike gives CSUMB a 1-0 victory

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Senior Nayeli Sandoval Gallo (Bloomington/San Bernardino Valley College) carried a long through ball into the box and slotted home her first of the season to give Cal State Monterey Bay a 1–0 win over Dominican University Thursday afternoon at Kennelly Field.

The win was the first of the season for CSUMB, which leveled its record at 1–1–1. Dominican dipped to 0–1–2.

The match was scoreless until the 72nd minute, when the Otters took possession of a Jolie Poulet punt just past midfield. Freshman midfielder Ariana Palomo (Piedmont Hills HS) slipped a though ball past the Penguin back line to spring Sandoval Gallo on goal.

She carried the ball to all the way to the penalty spot from where she slipped it under a charging Poulet and inside the right post.

The teams finished dead even in shot attempts with 14 apiece, including eight in the second half for both sides. Dominican put 10 of its attempts on frame, but Otter senior goalkeeper Maleni Morales (Fremont/Las Positas College) was equal to the task each time she was called into action.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… the Otters safely dodged a Penguin corner kick in the 86th minute.

SAVING THE DAY… Senior goalkeeper Maleni Morales made a career–high 10 saves in Thursday's 1–0 win at Dominican. She eclipsed her previous best of seven set Sunday night at Stanislaus State.

TOP 10 MALENI… Her 10 saves in Thursday's win at Dominican tie maleni Morales for No. 8 in the Otter record book for saves in a match. The last Otter to turn the trick was Aubrey McKessy, who stopped 11 shots in a win at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Nov. 4, 2021.

KEEP IT CLEAN… Maleni Morales posted her second shutout in three attempts this season with Thursday's clean sheet at Dominican.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Ariana Palomo earned her first collegiate point with her assist in Thursday's win at Dominican.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Nayeli Sandoval Gallo 1; ASSISTS: Ariana Palomo 1; POINTS: Nayeli Sandoval Gallo 2; SHOTS: Amelia McManus 5; SAVES: Maleni Morales 10.

THE LAST WORD… "It feels great to find a result on the road today in a really tough environment. Dominican was organized and committed making the win even more rewarding. The gritty mentality the group showed today will serve us well in conference play." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the friendly confines of the Otter Sports Complex for the first time in 2022 when they host Academy of Art Saturday (Sept. 3) at 1 p.m.
