Otters Draw With Holy Names In Home Opener

Roberto Banegas scores for CSUMB; Otters out-shoot Hawks 15-4

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team played some quality soccer in its home opener Thursday night. The result proved to be a 1–1 draw with Holy Names University.

Roberto Banegas (Marina HS) earned the Otters a share of the spoils with a beauty from the top of the box in the 18th minute. Holy Names grabbed the early lead when Erik Arias poked one home from the doorstep in fifth minute.

The Otters dominated in terms of both position and possession, out–shooting the Hawks 15–4, including 10–0 in the second half. But the Holy Names defense kept its composure despite several dangerous Otter crosses nearly finding their way home in the second half.

CSUMB surely thought it had found the match–winner in the 75th minute when a strong build up put freshman Mason Ward (Temecula Valley HS) in alone on Holy Names goalkeeper Alexis Jimenez. But Jimenez was able to get just enough of the ball to send Ward's effort over the crossbar.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Alexis Sanchez's shot from the top of the box in the 90th minute sailed wide.

FOR (HOME) OPENERS… CSUMB improved to 8–15–3 in home openers after Thursday' draw with Holy Names. At the NCAA Division II level (2004–present), the Otters are 7–8–3 in home openers. Under Graeme Jaap, the Otters improved to 1–0–2 in home openers.

HOME COOKING… The Otters have enjoyed their home cooking under the tutelage of Head Coach Graeme Jaap. CSUMB is now 8–4–6 in home contests since he took the reins for the 2019 season.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Freshman Nathan Padilla earned his first collegiate point with a helped on Roberto Banegas's goal.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Roberto Banegas 1; ASSISTS: Nathan Padilla 1; POINTS: Roberto Banegas 2; SHOTS: Miguel Guerrero 4; SAVES: Matthias Milton 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will host Dominican University in a pre-Labor Day affair Sunday (Sept. 4) at the Otter Sports Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
