Late Penalty Sinks Otters Against Dominican

Freshman Ronaldo Guardarrama scores first collegiate goal in 2-1 setback

SEASIDE, Calif. — For the second consecutive home game the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team played well enough to get a win without finding the result it hunted. Sunday night at the Otter Sports Complex, Dominican University used a late penalty to upend the Otters, 2–1.

The Otters doubled Dominican's time in the attacking third and out-shot the Penguins 13–8. But Dominican took advantage of a turnover in the Otter box 18 minutes into the first half to take a 1–0 lead.

The Otters answered back when sophomore Janos Kömmerling (Dusseldorf, Germany), making his first appearance of the season, stripped Aboubacar Cisse of the ball in the attacking third and fed freshman Ronaldo Guardarrama (San Marcos/Madison HS), who tucked his first collegiate goal inside the near post with 66 seconds remaining in the first half.

Otter goalkeeper Matthias Milton guessed correctly, but the Sanchez strike had too much pace. Milton was able to deflect the shot but not prevent the goal.

CSUMB continued to carry play for much of the final 17 minutes but couldn't find the equalizer.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Less than two minutes after Dominican pulled ahead, an Alexis Sanchez free kick fell to the feet of freshman Mason Ward in the middle of the Penguin box. He had Dominican keeper Alejandro Reyes beat, but sent his effort over the crossbar.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Ronaldo Guardarrama joined the collegiate goal scorers club with his strike late in the first half against Dominican Sunday evening. He joins fellow freshman Mason Ward in that club.

WHAT ABOUT BANEGAS? Roberto Banegas scored his first Otter goal this earlier this week versus Holy Names University. It was, however, his second collegiate goal as he scored previously during a brief stint at NCAA Division III member SUNY–Potsdam.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Ronaldo Guardarrama 1; ASSISTS: Janos Kömmerling 1; POINTS: Ronaldo Guardarrama 2; SHOTS: Miguel Guerrero 4; SAVES: Mattias Milton 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters are scheduled to hit the road for a non–NCAA match at NAIA member William Jessup University Wednesday (Sept. 7). There is a possibility that match may be adjusted due to the expected heat advisory next week. Follow OtterAthletics.com and @CSUMBMSoccer on Twitter for the latest updates.
