Otters Fall In CCAA Title Game, Await NCAA Fate

Jensen Main, Ally Acayaga and Jessilyn Barrow named to all-tournament team

SEASIDE, Calif. — A freak sixth inning undid a weekend's worth of hard work as Cal State Monterey Bay fell to Sonoma State 10–5 in the title game of the 2022 CCAA Softball Championship Tournament Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex.

The win gives Sonoma State (40–16) the CCAA's automatic bid into next week's NCAA Regional Championship. CSUMB (37–21) now must wait for an all but certain at-large berth to be announced on Monday at 7 a.m. (Pacific).

Seniors Jessilyn Barrow (Folsom HS) and Jensen Main (Stevenson School/Sacramento State) and freshman Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) each earned all–tournament honors for CSUMB.

The Otters used an RBI triple from Ivana Perez (Troy HS/Oregon State) and a run-scoring single from Alcayaga to jump to a 2–0 lead in the bottom of the first. CSUMB extended its lead in the second when Ashley Honorio (Stockton/Bear Creek HS) to plate another.

But Jesse DuPuis came on in relief to escape a bases-loaded, 1-out jam and keep the deficit at 3–0 in what turned out to be a critical hold.

Tournament MVP Jordyn Martinez hit a 2–run homer in the fourth inning to pull the Seawolves back to within a run. The Otters quickly restored their 3–run advantage with single markers in the fourth and fifth innings.

That set the stage for a wild sixth. The first five Seawolves reached base, including two on singles that didn't leave the infield turf. After a foul out and another infield hit tied the game at 5–5, Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) came on in relief to quiet the bases-loaded storm. Gasper got ground balls to short and second that would have ended the inning, but both throws home were dropped, opening the flood gates for an additional five Sonoma runs that essentially iced the game.

Alcayaga, Barrow and Honorio each had two hits Sunday. Perez had a run and an RBI with her triple. Haylee Clay (Whittier/Univ. of Hawaii) and Abby Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) each added doubles.
