Late Rally Lifts Sonoma Past Otters In Opener

Seawolves score three in bottom of seventh for 4–3 victory

POSTGAME INTERVIEWS

SAN MARCOS, Calif. —
No. 4 seed Sonoma State scored three times with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull of an improbable 4–3 win over No. 5 seed Cal State Monterey Bay in the winner's bracket of the NCAA Division II West Regional Thursday at the Cal State San Marcos Softball Field.

CSUMB (37–22) will play an elimination game tomorrow against No. 1 seed Cal State San Marcos, itself an upset victim in a 4–0 loss to Northwest Nazarene in Thursday's early game.

Sonoma opened the scoring in the most improbable way when Carissa Marquez hit a ball of the end of her bat that died just behind second base to bring home Lauren Mitroni with two outs. The Otters responded quickly when freshman Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) hit a 2–run home to left center — her ninth of the season — in the top of the third.

Things looked good for CSUMB with junior Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) in control. She retired 10 of the next 11 batters after the Sonoma run. The Otters loaded the bases with one out in the sixth and tacked on a run via a Brittney Perez (Stockton/St. Mary's HS) sacrifice fly.

Things looked even better when Gasper sandwiched a walk between two strikeouts to open the bottom of the seventh. But a Giana Hays triple and a Rylee Nishimoto bloop single just over shortstop tied the game.

Another infield single moved Nishimoto to second. Courtney Jack then singled Nishimoto to third and, when Jessilyn Barrow couldn't find the handle, Nishimoto came home to score the winning run.

Alcayaga, Haylee Caly (Whitter/La Serna HS) and Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) had two hits apiece for the Otters, who stranded 10 runners on base in the game. Gasper struck out nine and walked just two but took the loss.

GO OTTERS!
