Otters Win Twice To Reach CCAA Tournament Championship Game

CSUMB will face Sonoma State for the title Sunday at 10 a.m.

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay pulled of a dramatic, come-from-behind win to defeat Cal State Dominguez Hills, then held on to prevent No. 9 ranked Cal State San Marcos from doing the same to advance to Championship Sunday at the CCAA Softball Championship Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

Trailing 2–0 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning, CSUMB scored three times to walk-off Dominguez Hills in the first elimination game Saturday. The Otters then raced to leads of 4–0 and 7–3 before holding off a late San Marcos rally to eliminate the Cougars, 8–6.

The wins earn CSUMB (37–20) a spot in Championship Sunday, where it will face Sonoma State (39–16). Since Sonoma is undefeated in tournament play, the Otters will have to win twice to secure the championship.

Saturday began with an extremely well played game between the Otters and Dominguez Hills. The Toros eventually broke through with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pull ahead, 2–0.

Dominguez Hills was in firm control until the seventh, when the Otters finally solved Toros ace Ashley Wies. A single by Oli Perez (Ceres HS) and a 1–out error got the ball rolling. Jessilyn Barrow (Folsom HS) followed with a double into the right field corner to plate Perez.

Clarissa Ramirez came on in relief of  Wies, only to have freshman Jessica Cross (Simi Valley HS) greet her with an RBI single that tied the game. Ramirez followed with a wild pitch that allowed Barrow to come home with the game-winner.

An Abby Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) solo shot and an RBI double by Perez helped to Otters jump to a 4–0 lead against CCAA regular season champion San Marcos in Saturday's second elimination game. Abby's identical twin sister Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) added a 3–run bomb in the fourth inning as CSUMB seemed to have an answer for every Cougar challenge.

Junior Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) looked strong in her longest outing since February, allowing five hits and fanning six in six innings, before tiring in the seventh as San Marcos pulled to within 8–6. Senior Jensen Main (Stevenson School/Sacramento State) got the final three outs to earn her third save.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Jessilyn Barrow came home on a wild pitch with the walk-off run.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Jensen Main got Delaney Prater swinging for the final out with the potential tying runs on base.

CCAA TOURNAMENT TIME… CSUMB advances to CCAA Tournament Championship Game for the fourth time and the first time since 2015. This is just the second time the Otters have advanced through the loser's bracket to the title game.

THIRD TIME'S A CHARM? The Otters have won the CCAA Tournament title twice previously (2009 and 2015).

SEEING DOUBLE… As identical twins Abby and Ally Alcayaga often have people seeing double. Saturday, they had them seeing double in a different way as both of them homered in the same game for the second time this season in the win over San Marcos. The twins also turned that trick in a win over Dominican University on Mar. 23.

EXTRA BASES vs. DOMINGUEZ HILLS… DOUBLES: Jessilyn Barrow (5). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

EXTRA BASES vs. SAN MARCOS… DOUBLES: Ivana Perez (12), Ally Alcayaga (16), Oli Perez (12). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Abby Alcayaga (2), Ally Alcayaga (8)

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play Sonoma State for the CCAA Tournament championship Sunday at 10 a.m.

GO OTTERS!
