Otters Defeat East Bay To Advance At CCAA Championship

CSUMB must beat Dominguez Hills, San Marcos to advance to championship game

SEASIDE, Calif. — Junior Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) threw four innings of no-hit relief to lead Cal State Monterey Bay to a 6–2 win over Cal State East Bay in an elimination game at the CCAA Championship tournament Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

With the win, CSUMB (35–20 overall) advances to play Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday in an elimination game at 11 a.m. The winner of that game will play Cal State San Marcos for the right to face Sonoma State on Championship Sunday.

Dominguez Hill eliminated No. 2 seed Chico State in a 6–5 thriller in Friday's opening game. Sonoma advanced to Championship Sunday with a 12–8 win over No. 1 seed San Marcos.

The Otters had to come back twice to beat a pesky East Bay side Friday. The Pioneers took leads of 1–0 and 2–1 before an Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) sac fly gave the Otters the lead at 3–2 in the third inning. Run scoring grounders by Jessilyn Barrow (Folsom HS) and Haylee Clay (La Serna HS/Univ. of Hawaii), and RBI single from Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS), extended the Otter lead over the next three frames.

The extra runs proved to be superfluous as Gasper was in complete control in her longest outing since suffering an injury against East in early March. She allowed just three base runners – one via a walk and to on fielding errors – as the Pioneers never found a way to solve the Otter ace.

Freshman Kassidy Stetler (Tamalpais HS) got the start and was solid through three innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run.

Alcayaga, who also doubled and scored two runs, led the CSUMB offense. Clay and Oli Perez (Ceres HS) each scored one run and drove in another.
