Kenney, Otter Softball Pick Up Win No. 500

Otters complete Tournament of Champions sweep with 5-1 win over Saint Martin’s

TURLOCK, Calif. — Head Coach Andrea Kenney and the Cal State Monterey Bay softball program picked up victory No. 500 Sunday afternoon with a 5–1 over Saint Martin's University to conclude Tournament of Champions play at Pedretti Park.

Kenney started the Otter softball program in 2006 and quickly led it to national prominence with a trip to the NCAA Tournament in just its third season. Five more NCAA appearance, five California Collegiate Athletic Association titles and 25 score of victories later, the Otters picked up win No. 500 to clinch the Tournament of Champions title as they were the only team to finish tournament play undefeated (5–0).

Sunday's win brought CSUMB's season record to 26–10 and its current win streak to 12 games. As they had to do in four of their five tournament wins, they needed to come from behind to do it.

After yielding a run in the first inning, the Otters used a hit batter, a wild pitch, and a single off the second base bag from Abby Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) to tie the game in the second.  A 2–run double by Haylee Clay (Whittier/La Serna HS/Univ. of Hawaii) and an RBI single from Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) highlighted a 3–run  third that put CSUMB in control.

From there, it was up to senior Jensen Main (Stevenson School/Sacramento State) to close the door, which she did with six shutout innings to finish the game.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Jensen Main got Devyn Connolly to fly out to right to end the sixth representing the tying run.

MAKE IT A DOZEN… CSUMB is riding a 12–game winning streak following a perfect 5–0 performance at the Tournament of Champions. It marks the third–longest winning streak in the program's 16–year history and its sixth streak of 10 or more wins. The all–time Otter record for consecutive wins is 19 games from Mar. 15 through Apr. 11, 2014.

THE 500 CLUB… With 500 victories since starting the program from scratch in 2006, Andrea Kenney has the most wins of any CCAA coach over that span. The Otters join Cal Poly Humboldt and Sonoma State as the only CCAA programs to amass that many wins over that time frame.

THE 400 CLUB… Abby Alcayaga, Haylee Clay and Alyssa Burt each hit .400 or better at the Tournament of Champions. Alcayaga led the way with a .471 average (8–for–17) with three doubles and four RBI. Clay finished at .412 (7–for–17) with three doubles, four runs and five RBI. Burt hit .400 (6–for–15) with a double and four RBI.

CLOSING THE CIRCLE… Jensen Main and Kassidy Stetler were stellar in the circle for the Otters at the Tournament of Champions, combining for a 5–0 record and a 0.80 ERA while holding opponents to a .207 batting average. Main went 3–0 with a 0.55 ERA while Stetler finished 2–0 with a 1.45 ERA and a .147 opponent batting average.

THE LAST WORD… "I can't think of a more perfect way to celebrate the programs 500th win. This is a tribute to all the amazing athletes I have had the privilege to coach and I am honored to pick up this win with the 2022 team. They are a very special group." — CSUMB Head Coach Andrea Kenney

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to CCAA play by traveling to the Inland Empire to take on Cal State San Bernardino in a 4–game series beginning with an April 8th doubleheader.
