Otters Earn Another Key Split At No. 6 Cal State San Marcos

CSUMB improves to 5-2 against Top 10 teams this season

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay split on the road at No. 6 Cal State San Marcos for the second consecutive day Saturday to all but clinch a spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament. The Otters took the opener 11–4 before San Marcos rallied to earn the series split with an 8–0 win in the nightcap.

The win lifts CSUMB's record to 31–17 overall and 16–16 in CCAA play. The only scenario in which the Otters would not get into the tournament involves an unlikely series of sweeps next weekend that would include conference–leading San Marcos getting swept by last–place Cal Poly Humboldt.

The Otters put Saturday's opener away early by scoring five times in the second inning and four more times in the third. Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) hit a her sixth home run of the season and Jessilyn Barrow (Folsom HS) hit a pair of triples to punctuate the 14–hit Otter attack.

Senior Jensen Main (Stevenson School/Sacramento State) allowed just one earned run in 5 2/3 innings of relief to earn her 20th win of the season.

San Marcos (36–8, 25–7) turned the tables in the series finale by scoring five times in the third inning to break open a scoreless game. Otter batters struck out only once in the game but managed just three hits.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… an Oli Perez (Ceres HS) RBI triple broke the seal on a 4–run third inning that gave the Otters a 9–2 lead.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Paige Donnelly's sac fly put a bow on a 5–run Cougar third.

20–WIN CLUB… Jensen Main became a member of an exclusive club by winning her 20th game of 2022 in Saturday's opener. Main becomes just the fourth player in Otters history to accomplish that feat, joining Cori Reinhardt (2012, 14, 15), Hayley Fein (2017) and Lindsey Clarkson (2014).

DOUBLE TRIPLE CLUB… Jessilyn Barrow became the member of an even more exclusive club by hitting two triples in Saturday's opener at Cal State San Marcos. She joins Angelina Orozco as the only other member of the club. Orozco did it in a win over Humboldt State on Mar. 11, 2012.

TEST AGAINST THE BEST, PART I… The Otters improved to 5–2 against NCAA Division II Top 10 teams in 2022 with Saturday's split at No. 6 Cal State San Marcos. The Otters are 7–4 against teams ranked in the Top 20 this season.

TEST AGAINST THE BEST, PART II… The Otters earned their 55th win against a ranked team Saturday at Cal State San Marcos. The Otters have averaged nearly four wins per season against nationally–ranked competition in their 14–season plus history.

EXTRA BASES, GAME 1… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: Oli Perez (3), Jessilyn Barrow 2 (4,5). HOME RUNS: Ally Alcayaga (6).

EXTRA BASES, GAME 2… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to host Cal State Dominguez Hills in a 4–game series Apr. 29–30 at the Otter Sports Complex.
