Double The Fun In Day 1 Sweep At Tournament of Champions

Otters hit school record eight doubles in tournament-opening win

TURLOCK, Calif. -- Cal State Monterey Bay hits a school record eight doubles in its Tournament of Champions opening win over Simon Fraser then parlayed that win Jensen Main's (Stevenson School/Sacrmaento State) six shutout of 2022 to sweep its opening day twinbill Friday at the Pedretti Sports Complex.

CSUMB beat Simon Fraser 9-7 in its opener before blanking Western Oregon 2-0 to improve to 23-10 overall.

The record eight doubles against the Clan snapped the previous record of seven set twice before, both times against Stanislaus State. Freshman third baseman Abby Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) led the way by tying the Otter individual record with three doubles. Her twin sister, Ally Alcayaga, added two doubles of her own.

Jessica Cross (Simi Valley HS), Jessilyn Barrow (Folsom HS) and Oli Perez (Ceres HS) also contributed to the record.

CSUMB had to overcome five errors that gifted Simon Fraser five unearned runs to win its first game. SFU scored five times on four errors in the second inning alone before the Otter offense found its rythym. When they got rolling, Otter bats pounded out 16 hits, their second highest total of the season, while scoring nine unanswered runs.

Freshman Kassidy Stetler (Tamalpais HS) came on in relief to settle things down, throwing 4 2/3 innings of scoreless ball before tiring in the seventh. Main came back to get the final two outs to secure the win.

Main didn't need any relief help to tame the Wolves of Western Oregon. She was in total control, tossing a complete game 4-hitter while allowing only one base runner as far as second.

Abby Alcayaga led the offense once again, driving in both Otter runs with RBI singles in the fifth and seventh innings.

Tournament of Champions play continues for CSUMB with two games Saturday. The Otters will play Northwest Nazarene at 9 a.m. before meeting the nation's No. 1 ranked team, Concordia University, at 2 p.m.
