Stetler Twirls A Gem To Lead Otters To Split With East Bay

Kassidy Stetler throws 2–hit shutout in her first collegiate start

HAYWARD, Calif. — Freshman Kassidy Stetler (Mill Valley/Tamalpais HS) made her first collegiate start a memorable one, twirling a 2–hit shutout to lead Cal State Monterey Bay to a doubleheader split with Cal State East Bay Saturday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

Stetler allowed singles in the second and third innings, but otherwise silenced Pioneer bats, finishing with six strikeouts and no walks allowed.

Two of East Bay's four Game 2 errors helped the Otters blow the game open with a 6–run third inning. Haylee Clay's (Whittier/Univ. of Hawaii) hustle double and sac flies by Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) and Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) highlighted the inning.

The Otters ended the game via run rule when Burt's no–doubt homer disappeared into the blackness beyond right field in the sixth.

Just as East Bay miscues helped spark the CSUMB offense in Game 2, five Otter errors led to three unearned Pioneer runs in the opener. CSUMB trailed 3–1 early but rallied to take a 4–3 lead thanks to Alcayaga's first collegiate home run and an Oli Perez (Ceres HS) RBI triple.

East Bay catcher Annelise Garcia tied the game with an RBI triple in the fifth inning before a passed ball and a wild pitch allowed the winning run to come home in the seventh.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Madeline Ramirez scored on a wild pitch to give East Bay a 5–4 lead in the seventh inning. CSUMB went quietly in the bottom half of the inning.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Jessilyn Barrow scored on a passed ball to open the 6–run Otter third. Stetler threw three no–hit innings from that point forward, allowing the offense to put the game away.

TURNING ON THE POWER… After not hitting a home run over the first 10 games, the Otters are finding their power stroke. The Otters have homered in five of their last nine games, including the last three in a row.

TURNING ON THE FOUR II… The Otters have homered in three consecutive games for the first time since Feb. 15–21, 2020. They haven't homered in four consecutive games since doing it from Apr. 9–11, 2017.

DON'T CROSS JESSICA… Opposing pitchers would do well to steer clear of red-hot Jessica Cross. The freshman outfielder went 5–for–7 Saturday, including a 4–for–4 effort in Game 1. She has hit safely in nine of her last 10 games, going 21–for–36 (.583) over that span.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game set against Cal State East Bay with a doubleheader against the Pioneers starting Sunday at noon.
