Main Wins Both Games As Otters Earn Series Sweep Over Humboldt

CSUMB runs win streak to season–high seven games

SEASIDE, Calif. — Senior Jensen Main (Stevenson School/Sacramento State) won both ends of Saturday's doubleheader versus Cal Poly Humboldt to lead Cal State Monterey Bay to a 4–game sweep of the Lumberjacks at the Otter Sports Complex.

Main threw a complete game 4–hitter to win the opener, 3–1. She came on to throw an inning and two-thirds of perfect relief as the Otters took the finale in dramatic fashion, 3–2.

CSUMB improved to 21–10 overall and 11–9 in CCAA play with Saturday's wins.

Main was sharp in the opener, allowing just four hits while striking out five. But Humboldt starter Karen Di Dio matched her almost pitch for pitch, tossing a 3–hitter in her best start of the season.

Humboldt took an early lead on Katelyn Dendas' RBI double in the second inning, though it proved to be the only time they would touch Main on this day.

The Otters tied it in the home half of the second on a Lumberjack throwing error that allowed Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) to score. They took the lead an inning later when Abby Alcayaga's (Sonoma Valley HS) ground out cashed in a leadoff double by Ivana Perez (Troy HS/Oregon State).

CSUMB jumped out early in the nightcap thanks to a solo shot from Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) in the first inning. The Otters doubled their advantage on an Abby Alcayaga RBI grounder in the second before solo shots by Julia Rivera and Izzy Starr in the fifth and sixth tied the game at 2–2.

Singles by Burt and Abby Alcayaga leading off the sixth set the table for the dramatic finish. Ashley Honorio (Stockton/Bear Creek HS) laid down a squeeze bunt. The throw home was in time, but Burt deftly slid around the tag of Micaela Harris for what proved to be the winning run.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Jensen Main coaxed pinch hitter Julia Rivera, representing the potential tying run, to ground into a force play for the final out.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Jensen Main got the dangerous Micaela Harris to ground out to second with the potential tying run on second base.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… The Otters earned their first series sweep of 2022 by beating Humboldt four times this weekend. It's the first series sweep for the Otters since they took four from — wait for it — Humboldt Feb. 14–15, 2020. CSUMB's eight consecutive wins in the series is by far its longest streak against the Lumberjacks, eclipsing the 5–game streak it had from Mar. 31, 2009 through Mar. 20, 2010.

WINNER, WINNER, WINNER, WINNER CHICKEN DINNER… Jensen Main enjoyed quite the week for the Otters, earning victories in four of CSUMB's six wins. She threw a 2–hit shutout to beat Dominican University Wednesday evening then won games one, three and four in the sweep of Cal Poly Humboldt. She improved to 13–5 overall and lowered her ERA to 1.34, the third-lowest ERA in the CCAA.

EXTRA BASES… DOUBLES: Ally Alcayaga (9), Ivana Perez (6). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Ally Alcayaga (4).

THE LAST WORD… "The team has dealt with a great deal of adversity this season. I am more then proud of the progress we have made. Jensen Main has been a workhorse for us and freshman Ally Alcayaga is playing is playing like a veteran." — CSUMB Head Coach Andrea Kenney

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to Turlock for the annual Tournament of Champions April 1–3 at Pedretti Park. CSUMB will open tournament play Friday with games against Simon Fraser (9 a.m.) and Western Oregon (4:30 p.m.).
