Otters Run Win Streak To Five With Sweep Of Humboldt

Otters chop down Lumberjacks 9-4, 8-0

SEASIDE, Calif. -- Cal State Monterey Bay used timely hitting a a strong pitching performance from freshman Kassidy Stetler (Tamalpais HS) to run its winning streak to five games with a 9-4, 8-0 (5 inn.) sweep of Cal Poly Humboldt Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

Freshman shortstop Oli Perez (Ceres HS) hit her team-leading fifth home run of the season to highlight a 12-hit Otter attack in the opener. Stetler tossed her second collegiate shutout, a 3-hitter, to lead the way in the nightcap.

Humboldt took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on a daring dash home from second by Micaela Harris following a sacrifice bunt. CSUMB (19-10, 9-9 CCAA) responded by scoring six unanswered runs to take control. Abby Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS), Jessica Cross (Simi Valley HS) and Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) all had RBI singles ahead of Perez's no-doubt blast to left in that rally.

Humboldt loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth, but Otter starter Jensen Main (Stevenson School/Sacramento State) limited the damage to two runs.

Cross led eight Otters in the hit column by going 3-for-4. Haylee Clay (Whittier/Univ. of Hawaii) and Alcayaga both had two hits.

Game 2 was all about Stetler as the emerging ace was threatened just once when the Lumberjacks strung together a pair of 1-out singles in the second inning. Her offense took over from there, plating one in the first and four more in the second.

The Otters put the game away in the fifth when Ivana Perez's (La Habra/Oregon State) grounder up up the middle deflected off the glove of diving shortstop Vanessa Slatos with two outs, allowing Courtney McAllister (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) to score the game-ending run from third.

Perez was one of five Otters to collect two hits in the nightcap, finishing the game 2-for-3 with a double, two runs, three RBI and a steal of home. Cross, Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS), Clay and Burt all went 2-for-3 as well.

The Otters and Lumberjacks will conclude their 4-game series with a doubleheader Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
