Power, Pitching, Daring Lead Otters To Sweep Of Penguins

Jensen Main, Kassidy Stelter toss 15 shutout innings; Alcayaga twins star on offense

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay used a pair of pitching gems, some twin power and a daring dash from freshman Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) to sweep visiting Dominican University Wednesday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

Ally and her twin sister Abby Alcayaga both went deep in a 5–0 opening game win. Ally finished the sweep by scoring from second base on Abby's infield single with two outs in the eighth inning for the walk-off, 1–0 victory.

That support was enough to compliment phenomenal efforts in the circle from senior Jensen Main (Stevenson School/Sacramento State) and freshman Kassidy Stetler (Tamalpais HS). Main matched her season high with nine strikeouts while tossing a 2–hit shutout in Game 1. Stetler allowed just two hits while fanning six in 5 2/3 innings in the nightcap.

Main returned to deliver 2 1/3 innings of perfect relief, earning the win in both games. She improved to 10–5 for the season.

CSUMB (17–10 overall) drove Dominican ace Shelby Keltner to an early shower in the first game, touching her for four runs in 2 2/3 innings. Rosa Leguria came in to settle things down, but with Main in control, the Penguins never threatened.

Dominican's Game 2 starter, senior Kathryn Caravahlo, made arguably the best start of her collegiate career, matching Stetler nearly pitch for pitch. She allowed just two hits through seven innings before the Otters scraped together the winning rally.

Jessilyn Barrow (Folsom HS) beat out a infield single to open the frame. Ally Alcayaga popped a sacrifice attempt in front of the plate that just eluded the diving glove of catcher Mady Salonga for another infield hit.

A strikeout and a fielder's choice left Ally on second base with two outs when Abby grounded a ball up the middle. Shortstop Lauren Lapinid showed great range getting to the ball behind the bag, but Abby never hesitated rounding third and beat Lapinid's throw home easily.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Ally Alcayaga's 2–run blast gave the Otters a 4–0 lead in the third inning. Dominican managed only a 2–out single in the seventh over the final four innings.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Ally Alcayaga came around to score from second base on twin sister Abby Alcayaga's infield single up the middle in the eighth inning to walk it off.

HOW SWEEP IT IS, SHUTOUT EDITION… The Otters swept two games in one day via shutout for the second time this season when they beat Dominican University 5–0 and 1–0 Wednesday night. CSUMB swept Holy Names University (9–0) and Azusa Pacific (4–0) on Feb. 4 to open the season.

THE WAY OF THE K… Jensen Main and Kassidy Stetler relied on the K to record their two shutouts, combining to strike out 20 Penguins over 15 innings Wednesday night. Main finished with 14 total — including nine in her Game 1 victory. Stetler fanned six in 5 2/3 innings.

EXTRA BASES… DOUBLES: Jessilyn Barrow. TRIPLES: None. HR: Abby Alcayaga (3rd); Abby Alcayaga (1st).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters begin a 4–game series against Cal Poly Humboldt with a doubleheader Friday at the Otter Sports Complex. Please note that first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. This is a change from the original 4 p.m. start time.
