Otters, Wildcats Split Big Innings, Doubleheader And Series

Oli Perez’s grand slam leads the way to victory in series finale

SEASIDE, Calif. — No. 12 Cal State Monterey Bay and No. 19 Chico State put on quite a show this weekend at the Otter Sports Complex, splitting a series that surely won't be the last time these teams meet in 2022.

Saturday afternoon, the teams traded big innings to split a doubleheader for the second consecutive day. Chico used an 8–run sixth inning to break open a scoreless first game and take the 8–0 decision. But CSUMB responded with a 7–run fifth inning of its own in the nightcap en route to a 9–6 win and a share of the spoils.

The split leaves CSUMB at 8–3 overall while Chico State is 10–4. Both teams are 2–2 in CCAA play.

Freshman Oli Perez (Ceres HS) delivered the big blast with her first collegiate home run — a grand slam at that — as part of eight unanswered Otter runs that overcame a 5–1 deficit.

Senior Jensen Main (Stevenson School/Sac State) saw her scoreless innings streak to open the season end at 28 1/3 when Chico scored twice in the opening frame of Game 2. Nevertheless, she struck out seven an earned the win to improve to 5–0 on the season.

Chico was able to take control in the opener when a pair of fielding miscues helped the Wildcats load the base and push a run across. Alania Ngyuen cleared the bases with a double and Chico added four more against three Otter relievers.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Alani Nguyen's bases–clearing double extended the Chico lead to 4–0 in the sixth inning. The Otters managed seven bases runners against Wildcat starter Brooke Larson but couldn't gain any real traction.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Jessica Cross's RBI single capped the 7–run Otter fifth and gave CSUMB an 8–5 lead.

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END… Jensen Main saw her scoreless innings streak to start the season end at 28 1/3 when Chico scored twice with two outs in the bottom of the first inning in Game 2. She allowed four more runs in the game, but they came as the result of a pair of Otter errors.

BREAKING THE POWER SEAL… CSUMB has averaged a healthy 4.7 runs per game through the first 11 games. But it wasn't until Oli Perez hit her grand slam in the fifth inning of Game 2 that the Otters claimed their first home run of the 2022 season.

OTHER POWER SOURCES… Although the Otters have just one home run, they've totaled 23 extra–base hits — and average of more than two per game — so far this season with 16 doubles and six triples. Otter pitching has allowed just nine extra–base hits (6 2B, 2 3B and 1 HR).

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Freshman outfield Delaney Huse-Davison collected her first collegiate hit — and RBI single — in the third inning of Game 2 Saturday.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT (GAME 1)… Ivana Perez (1x2); Alohilani Apalla (1x2).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT (GAME 2)… Jensen Main (W [5–0], 2ER, 7K); Oli Perez (1x4, GS HR [1]); Jessica Cross (2x3, SAC, R, RBI); Delaney Huse-Davison (1x2, BB, 2RBI, first collegiate hit).

THE LAST WORD… "I'm extremely please with the team effort this weekend. Playing a talented Chico State team this early in the season is a challenge. Our team rose to the occasion. Oli Perez was a hero today." — CSUMB Head Coach Andrea Kenney

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to the Bay area for six games, starting with a doubleheader at PacWest Conference rival Academy of Art Wednesday (Feb. 23).
