Otters Come Up Clutch In Sweep Of No. 3 Biola

CSUMB takes Game 1 2–1 (8 inn) before rolling 8–0 in the nightcap

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay combined its standard stellar pitching with clutch hitting and defense to come up with a huge early season sweep, taking a doubleheader from No. 3 Biola University Saturday afternoon on Freedom Field.

The Otters took the opener 2–1 in eight innings before cruising to an 8–0 win in the nightcap. Jensen Main (Stevenson School/Sac State) won game one to improve to 3–0. Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) threw a 2–hit shutout in the nightcap to improve to 3–1.

The marquee matchup game came in the first game, where the Otters faced reigning NCAA Division II Pitcher of the Week Paige Austin. Gasper got the start but gave way to Main after two innings. All the Otter senior did was throw six innings of 3–hit, shutout ball to keep CSUMB in the game.

Oregon State transfer Ivana Perez (La Habra/Troy HS) made her a winner with a 2–out, RBI single up the middle in the eighth.

Gasper took care of things herself in the nightcap. All she allowed were singles in the first and sixth innings while fanning six.

The Otter offense provided Gasper all of the offense she would need in the third inning. A Perez infield single plated the first run before Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) doubled her home.
CSUMB added runs in each of the fourth through seventh innings to remove all doubt from the outcome.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Jensen Main coaxed a routine grounder to second from Kaitlyn Hawkins with the tying run on third for the final out.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Ally Alcayaga doubled home Ivana Perez to give the Otters a 2–0 lead in the third inning. With Cassie Gasper in complete control, the outcome was never in doubt from that point.

GIANT KILLERS… Saturday's wins over No. 3 Biola University were CSUMB's first over a nationally–ranked opponent since beating (then) No. 14 UC San Diego on Feb. 14, 2020. To be fair, the Otters did not play in 2021 due to COVID.

MORE GIANT KILLERS… Saturday's wins over No. 3 Biola University were CSUMB's first wins against a Top 10 ranked team since beating (then) No. 8 Humboldt State on Apr. 29, 2017.

TESTED AGAINST THE BEST… Saturday's wins over No. 3 Biola University were the 49th and 50th wins over ranked teams in CSUMB's 15–plus years of softball action. CSUMB is 50–67 all–time against NCAA Top 25 teams.

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END… CSUMB saw its streak of not allowing an earned run end at 40 2/3 innings dating back to Mar. 7, 2020. The Otters began a new streak, however, which currently stands at 13 innings. By allowing one earned run Saturday, CSUMB's team ERA "ballooned" to 0.19.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Jensen Main (W [3–0] 6.0 IP, 3H, 0 R, 1K, 0BB); Cassie Gasper (W [3–1], 2 APP, 9.0 total IP, 2–hit ShO in Game 2, 8K, 0BB); Ivana Perez 5x9, 2 2B, 2R, 5RBI); Ally Alcayaga (3x7, 2 2B, RBI)Jessica Cross (2x5, 3R, RBI, 2BB).

THE LAST WORD… "This was a great day for MB softball. Although We saw some great individual performances from Ivana and Oli Perez and Jessica Cross, this was a team win. Cassie and Jensen were stellar again this week. This team plays for each other." — CSUMB Head Coach Andrea Kenney

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play their first home games since March of 2020 when they host defending CCAA Champion Chico State to open CCAA play Friday (Feb. 18) for a doubleheader.
