Otter Men's Basketball Notebook vs. Cal Poly Humboldt

Note: No fans will be admitted this weekend (Feb. 3-5)

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay will look to solidify its spot in the CCAA Tournament race when it hosts a pair of teams trying to chase down the Otters in the final month of the season this week in The Kelp Bed. The action begins Thursday (Feb. 3) with a visit from Cal Poly Humboldt for a 7:30 p.m. tip.

Please note no fans will be allowed to attend as campus guidelines mandate no spectators at Otter indoor home athletic events.

The Otters continued their impressive run Saturday with a 71–69 win at (then) No. 6 ranked Cal State San Marcos. It was CSUMB's second win over a Top 10 program in seven days, following a 64–61 win over (then) No. 7 Chico State on Jan. 22. They have their work cut out for them trying to move up the CCAA ladder as the three teams above them in the standings — Cal State San Bernardino (3rd), Cal State San Marcos (9th) and Chico State (10th) — all rank in the Top 10 in this week's NCAA Division II national poll. But wins this weekend over Humboldt and Sonoma would complete season sweeps of both teams and bring the goal of a top six finish and a postseason bid that much closer to reality.

The last time these teams met, freshman Jailen Nelson played with the poise of a senior when it mattered most, helping CSUMB thwart a late Humboldt rally to lift the Otters to a 77–74 overtime victory Dec. 4 in Lumberjack Arena. Nelson finished with his first collegiate double–double (14 points, 10 rebounds.). Jaden Edwards and Will Johnson each scored 19 for Humboldt.

CSUMB never trailed in regulation and built a lead as big as 18 points. But the Lumberjacks made a furious comeback at the end of regulation, out–scoring the Otters 13–0 over the final 2:43 to force overtime tied at 66–66.
