Game Slips Away Late At San Marcos

Cougars pull away in closing minutes to win 72-60

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Despite leading for nearly 14 minutes, the short-handed Cal state Monterey Bay men's basketball team saw host Cal State San Marcos make a late run to earn a 72–60 win Saturday afternoon at CSUSM's Sports Center.

With sophomore guard Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) missing his first collegiate game due to injury, the Otters played without one of their best weapons. Nelson came into the week ranked amongst the top passers in the CCAA before turning an ankle just moments after the tip Thursday at Cal State L.A.

Nevertheless, CSUMB took its final lead of the game with just over seven minutes remaining, 52–49, on a Joe Wall (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) 3-pointer. But San Marcos responded with an 11–0 run over the following three minutes to take control. The Otters never got closer than five points over the balance of the game.

Levi Frankland (Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia) broke out of a mini scoring drought to lead the Otters with 18 points, one off his season high. Sophomore guard Jordan Archie (Gardena/Bishop Montgomery HS) also recorded his second best scoring game of the season, finishing with 17 points, including five 3-pointers in seven attempts.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… the Otters missed a layup trailing 68–56 with 1:02 remaining.

MAKE IT AN EVEN 200… With eight 3–pointers Saturday at Cal State San Marcos, CSUMB continued to be prolific from long range, having made multiple 3–point field goals in 200 consecutive games. The last time they didn't make a 3–pointer came eight seasons ago when they went 0–for–9 in a 65–61 loss at Cal State L.A. on Feb. 1, 2014.

KEEPING THE LEADER QUIET… Cal State San Marcos entered Saturday's game boasting the CCAA's top scorer with Greg Milton leading the league at 21.4 points per game. The Otter defense held Milton to five points, the first time he failed to reach double figures since Feb. 19 of last season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Levi Frankland 18. REBOUNDS: Joe Wall 9. ASSISTS: Levi Frankland 3. BLOCKS: Jared Williams 1. STEALS: Levi Frankland/Jared Williams 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play their final game before the winter break when they host San Francisco State Monday (Dec. 19). The game will tip at 3 p.m. and the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.

GO OTTERS!
