O’Mahony Makes History As CCAA Defensive Player of the Year

Colin O’Mahony is one of four Otters honored by the CCAA for 2022

November 07, 2022

SEASIDE, Calif. — Senior Colin O'Mahony (Cork, Ireland) made Cal State Monterey Bay soccer history by earning California Collegiate Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year honors when the conference announced its annual awards Wednesday afternoon. O'Mahony is the first Otter in CSUMB's 18–season history of CCAA play to earn one of the league's major awards.

It's the second All–CCAA nod for O'Mahony, who was an honorable mention pick in 2021.

O'Mahony anchored an Otter defensive that tossed a CSUMB record six shutouts in 11 CCAA matches. He added his best offensive season, including a team–leading four assists and an Olimpico goal in a win over Cal State San Marcos.

O'Mahony has a year of NCAA eligibility remaining, but the Academic All–America® candidate is graduating this season and looking at options that include graduate school and a professional playing career.

Joining O'Mahony on the All–CCAA teams this season were trio of honorable mention selections. Forward Roberto Banegas (Marina HS/MPC) led CSUMB and finished third in the CCAA regular season with seven goals. Midfielder Miguel Guerrero (Redwood City/Sequoia HS) finished second on the team with three goals and third with seven points. Sophomore goalkeeper Matthias Milton (Elk Grove/Jesuit HS) posted six clean sheets, the second–best mark in CSUMB history.

"The staff is delighted that Matthias, Roberto and Miguel received individual recognition from the hard work that they put in," says CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap. Also really happy that Colin got recognized as the defensive player of the year. He has constantly strived to keep improving in his time here at CSUMB and I am sure he is not done yet in his future soccer endeavors. All the group have been a pleasure to work with and it's always pleasing when individuals get recognized within that."

Cal State Monterey Bay finished the 2022 8–8–2 overall and 6–5–0 in the CCAA. The Otters earned their highest ever CCAA finish (fourth) and advanced to the CCAA Championship Tournament for the first time since 2007.
