Otter Men Cruise Past Wildcats In Season Opener

CSUMB pulls away late in first half, holds off CWU rally in 77-57 win

MONMOUTH, Ore. — Cal State Monterey Bay enjoyed its finest season–opening performance in a decade by upending Central Washington 77–57 in the opening game of the GNAC/CCAA Challenge Friday evening in the New PE Building on the campus of Western Oregon University.

It marked CSUMB's first season–opening with since the 2014–15 season. The 20–point margin was its biggest ever in a season–opener against an NCAA opponent.

Seattle University transfer Joe Wall (Portland/Jesuit HS) came up huge in his first Otter performance, posting career highs of 22 points and nine rebounds to lead four Otters in double figures. Sophomore guard Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) chipped in 12 points and matched Wall's game high of nine boards.

Central jumped out early by taking a 7–3 lead, but the Otters responded quickly. Less than five minutes later, a Nelson steal led to a Wall fastbreak layup that gave the Otters an 11–9 lead. They would never trail again.

CSUMB led by 10 at the half, 33–23. The Wildcats closed to within six midway through the second half at 46–40 before a Wall 3–ball capped a 10–0 run that got the Otter lead back to 16 points. Central never got closer than 13 the rest of the way.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Returning for its sixth season, The Game Was Statistically Over When… segment uses the Bill James formula to calculate the exact point in the game when the winning team had a lead that statistically could not be overcome. Friday against Central Washington that moment came when Jailen Nelson converted his own steal into a fastbreak layup that gave the Otters a 68–47 lead with 5:04 remaining.

FOR OPENERS: The Otters have been treading water recently opening night, with Friday's 77–57 win over Central Washington making it seven wins in their last 14 openers. Overall, CSUMB is 10–14 on opening night dating back to 1998–99.

FOR ROAD OPENERS: With Friday's 77–57 win over Central Washington, the Otters now are 5–10 when opening the season away from The Kelp Bed.

TAMING THE WILDCATS: The Otters defeated Central Washington for the first time in six attempts Friday evening.

WHAT AN ENTRANCE! (TEAM EDITION) Friday's 77–57 (20–point) win over Central Washington was its biggest margin of victory (20 points) in a season opener ever against an NCAA or NAIA opponent. Their previous best was a 66–52 win over Academy of Art on Nov. 15, 2009. Their best against any opponent was a 104–52 win over Pacifica University on Nov. 11, 2012.

WHAT AN ENTRANCE! (PLAYER EDITION) Joe Wall's 22 points in Friday season–opening win over Central Washington were the most by a player in his first game in an Otter uniform. The record had belonged to Ryan Nitz, who scored 21 in a win over Academy of Art on Nov. 19, 2013.

Wall's 22 points were the most by an Otter in a season opener since Mateo Jones scored 24 in an overtime loss at Concordia–Portland on Nov. 11, 2017.

A THIEF IN THE…EVENING: Jailen Nelson recorded a career–high six steals in Friday's win over Central Washington. That mark is a CSUMB record against NCAA Division II competition and ranks No. 4 in the Otter record book for a game. They are the most steals by an Otter since Stanley Thorne had six against Wesleyan College on Jan. 3, 2002.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT: POINTS: Joe Wall 22. REBOUNDS: Jailen Nelson/Joe Wall 9. ASSISTS: Jailen Nelson 3. BLOCKS: Jared Williams 1. STEALS: Jailen Nelson 6.

THE LAST WORD: "Tonight was a great way to start off the season. Our play throughout the night was a little sporadic, but when we made mistakes the energy never dropped and the guys did a great job of rallying around one another. That's an amazing attribute for a young team to have. I can't wait to see how they develop has the season goes along." — CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT: The Otters will close play at the GNAC/CCAA Challenge Saturday when they face host Western Oregon. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
