Late Run Leads Western Oregon Past Otters, 87-80

Joe Wall leads the way again with 21 points

MONMOUTH, Ore. — A late run led host Western Oregon allowed the Wolves to rally past Cal State Monterey Bay for an 87–80 victory in the final game of the GNAC/CCAA Challenge Saturday night in WOU's New PE Buiulding.

Seattle University transfer Joe Wall (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) led CSUMB with his second consecutive 20–point game, scoring 21 Saturday night. Senior guard Levi Frankland (Gold Coast, Queensland, Aust.) added 19 points while Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) chipped in eight points with team highs of six rebounds and five assists.

CSUMB grabbed its first lead at 14–12 midway through the first half and did not trail again until a 12–4 run by the Wolves turned a 57–50 Otter lead into a 62–59 deficit with 6:21 remaining. The Otters never reclaimed the advantage.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Zach Moore made 1-of-2 free throws with 1:00 remaining to give Western a 79–68 lead.

20–20 VISION: With 22 points Friday against Central Washington and 21 Saturday against Western Oregon, Joe Wall is the first Otter to post consecutive 20-point games since Jordan May did it three times from Dec. 20 – Jan. 6 last season.

WE LOVE THE 80s: Saturday's 87–80 loss at Western Oregon was a bit of an aberration, given that the 80s have been incredibly friendly territory for the Otters in recent history. With Saturday's setback, CSUMB now owns a 53–10 (.841) mark in its last 63 games when scoring at least 80 in regulation games dating to the 2007–08 season.

BOMBS AWAY: By making 10-of-28 from beyond the arc Saturday at Western Oregon — and 10-of-18 in Friday's win over Central Washington — the Otters now have made 10 or more 3–pointers in 17 of the last 24 games.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT: POINTS: Joe Wall 22. REBOUNDS: Jailen Nelson 6. ASSISTS: Jailen Nelson 5. BLOCKS: Jordan Archie 2. STEALS: Joe Wall 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT: The Otters return to the friendly confines of The Kelp Bed for their first home games of the season when they host the Otter Invitational Friday and Saturday, Nov. 18–19. CSUMB kicks off tournament play Friday against the University of Alaska. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. following the opening game between Cal State East Bay and Colorado School of Mines.
