Otters Are Postseason Bound After Win At Chico

1-0 victory puts CSUMB in postseason for first time since 2007

CHICO, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team punched its ticket to the postseason by shutting out Chico State 1–0 Sunday afternoon the Chico's University Soccer Stadium.

With the victory, CSUMB (8–6–2, 6–4–0 CCAA) clinched not only a CCAA Tournament berth but a home match in the first round as well. Depending on other results, CSUMB will finish no lower than fourth and will host either the No. 5 or No. 6 seed Sunday, Oct. 30 at a time to be determined.

Roberto Banegas (Marina HS/MPC) finished a Colin O'Mahony (Cork, Ireland) feed in the box in the 15th minute to provide all the scoring the Otters would need. The CSUMB defense was stout in front of sophomore goalkeeper Matthias Milton (Elk Grove/Jesuit HS), who needed to make just one save to earn his sixth shutout of the season.

Although they finished with just one goal, the Otters controlled this match from the outset. They out-shot Chico 12–3 and compiled a 5–1 advantage in corner kicks as well.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Alexis Sanchez blocked a speculative effort from well outside the box by Adrian Fontanelli in the 41st minute. It was the last shot the Wildcats would attempt in the match.

WELCOME BACK… The Otters will be making their first postseason appearance since qualifying for the CCAA Tournament as the No. 2 seed in the CCAA North Division back in 2007.

MAKING THEIR POINT(S)… With a 6–4–0 record in CCAA play, the Otters have 18 points in the conference table. It's their most since compiling 21 points in 2007. It should be noted that teams played 14 CCAA contests that season.

KEEP IT CLEAN… Matthias Milton earned his sixth shutout of 2022 with Sunday's 1–0 clean sheet against Chico State. That is the Otter record for shutouts at the NCAA Division II level. He needs one more to tie Cristian Materazzi (2002) for the all–time CSUMB record.

TOP 10 BANEGAS… Roberto Banegas scored his seventh goal of 2022 in Sunday's 1–0 win over Chico State. That ties him for the No. 10 spot on the CSUMB list for goals in a season with Adrian Rebollar (2021), Luis Lopez (2019) and Adam Voloder (2016). Walmer Martinez owns CSUMB's NCAA Division II record with 13 goals in 2019. Kyle Archibald owns the all–time record with 16 in 2003.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Roberto Banegas 1; ASSISTS: Colin O'Mahony 1; POINTS: Roberto Banegas 2; SHOTS: Four Otters 2; SAVES: Matthias Milton 1.

THE LAST WORD… "The guys were magnificent today. We defended our box really well and played some really good soccer into the bargain. The challenge for this group was to go on the road and win a game and they did that with some style. We are really excited to be playing in the conference tournament for the first time since 2007. This group deserves that for all the hard work that they have put in." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home for their regular season finale Thursday (Oct. 27) against nationally–ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. as the second match of doubleheader action.
