Otters Take 21 Shots But Fall 1–0 To Stanislaus

CSUMB earns a 21–11 shot advantage

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team suffered a painful setback Sunday, falling to Stanislaus State 1–0 at Cardinale Stadium.

With the defeat, CSUMB slips to 6–6–3 overall and 3–4–1 in the CCAA. The loss means the Otters now will need some assistance to reach the CCAA Tournament as they sit three points outside the top six with three matches remaining.

Stanislaus strengthened its position by moving into a tie for third at 14 points (4–2–2 in the CCAA).

The match was a contrast in styles as Stanislaus was content to counter punch against the more possession oriented attack of the Otters. The strategy netted a goal in the 12th minute when a failed clearance and some aggressive pressure by Sabrina Cabrera found the junior forward open in the Otter box. She banged a shot off the bottom of the crossbar and it just landed over the line for the goal.

CSUMB had plenty of chances to responded, including hitting the post twice in less than a minute midway through the first half. The Otters also missed a penalty kick wide of goal in the 39th minute.

Things got even more promising for CSUMB when Cabrera took a straight red three minutes after the restart. But despite building a 21–11 edge in shots, the Otters couldn't solve Stanislaus goalkeeper Alexia Estrada, who made 11 saves to earn the clean sheet.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Jasmine Safarians sent CSUMB's final shot attempt of the afternoon wide of goal in the 84th minute.

20–20–20 VISION… The Otters reached the 20–shot plateau for the third time this season when they peppered the Stanislaus State goal with 21 shots Sunday afternoon. CSUMB took a season–high 24 shots at Stanislaus State on Aug. 28.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Jasmine Safarians 5; SAVES: Maleni Morales 6.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to Arcata to begin a 2–match roadtrip at Cal Poly Humboldt on Friday (Oct. 21). Kickoff will be at 12:30 p.m. as the opening match of doubleheader action.
