Otters Share The Spoils With Lumberjacks

Natalia Leroux scores the CSUMB goal

ARCATA, Calif. — With both teams badly in need of a victory and the three points that accompany one, Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal Poly Humboldt were forced to share the spoils after playing to a 1–1 draw Friday afternoon at College Creek Field on the Cal Poly campus.

With the tie, CSUMB (3–4–2 CCAA) and Humboldt (2–2–5) temporarily move into a tie for seventh place in the CCAA women's soccer race pending the outcome of Friday's late matches. With two matches remaining, both teams are trying to crack the Top 6 and earn berths in the CCAA Championship Tournament.

The Otters opened Friday's scoring when some strong work on the endline by Jasmine Safarians (Pleasant Hill/College Park HS) and Nayeli Sandoval Gallo (Bloomington HS/San Bernardino Valley College) set up Amelia McManus (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS) at point blank range. Humboldt goalkeeper Carson Thomson-Terrel parried her shot, but Natalia Leroux (Martinez/College Park HS) buried the rebound.

It took the Lumberjacks barely eight minutes to respond when Erin Mohr sent a long ball over the top to Arellano Duran, who beat Maleni Morales 1v1 for the equalizer.

The teams battled to a standstill over the final 74 minutes. Humboldt claimed a narrow 7–6 edge in shots. Morales made three save to secure the Otter point.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… The Otters successfully defended a corner kick in the 88th minute. It proved to be the last scoring opportunity for either team.

FIT TO BE TIED… Friday's tie was the 17th tie for the Otters since the start of the 2017 season. The Otters combined for 16 ties over the first 16 years of their existence prior to 2017.

HIGH 5 FOR McMANUS… With her assist on Natalia Leroux's goal, Amelia McManus took sole possession of the No. 5 spot on the CSUMB list for points in a season with 17. The Otter record for points at the NCAA Division II level is 20 by Kristen Womack in 2015. The all–time Otter record is 45 by Brittani Donachie (22 goals, 1 assist) set during the 2002 season.

MORALES IN THE TOP 10… With three saves Friday at Cal Poly Humboldt, Maleni Morales moved up to the No. 9 spot on the Otter list for saves in one season with 69. Next up on the list is Andrea Schuitema, who posted 89 saves in 2001.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Natalia Leroux 1; ASSISTS: Amelia McManus 1; POINTS: Natalia Leroux 2; SHOTS: Amelia McManus 2; SAVES: Maleni Morales 3.

THE LAST WORD… "Today was a physical battle for the team, and our challenge was putting the ball on the ground and playing our game. We had some great moments, and continue to be dangerous when we get numbers into the attack. We plan to continue that on Sunday." — CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to Chico for their final regular season road match when they battle Chico State Sunday (Oct. 23). Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. as the second match of men's/women's doubleheader action.
