Otters Ride Early Goal To Key Win Over Stanislaus

Romero marker earns MB three key points in postseason fight

SEASIDE, Calif. — Three great individual efforts and some solid team support led the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team to a key 1–0 win over Stanislaus State  Sunday afternoon at Cardinale Stadium.

The first great individual effort was an amazing passing from Colin O'Mahony (Cork, Ireland) to spring Javier Romero (San Francisco/Marshall HS) alone on Warrior goalkeeper Robby Rosas. Rosas gave a brave challenge, but Romero's shot had too much pace and deflected of Rosas's hand and in for the Otter sophomore's third goal of 2022.

The third effort came 120 yards in the other direction. In the 44th minute, Stanislaus striker Sammy Villanueva caught Otter keeper Matthias Milton off his line and came within inches of knotting the score. But from right on the goalline, junior defender Garrett Hayes (El Toro HS/Irvine Valley College) was able to deflect the shot over the bar, negating the best Stanislaus opportunity of the afternoon.

CSUMB built a 22–6 edge in shots and an 8–4 advantage in corners. Milton made three saves to earn his fifth shutout of the season.

The victory moved CSUMB (7–5–2, 5–3–0 CCAA) temporarily into sole possession of second place in the CCAA race with three contests remaining. The loss was a bitter pill for a Stanislaus side, whose record (4–6–5, 1–5–2), which now needs a ton of help if it's to reach the CCAA Tournament.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Matthias Milton handled corralled a Clayton Crockett attempts in the 89th minute. It proved to be the last Warrior opportunity.

THE PLAYOFF PICTURE… The Otters will finish play Sunday in no worse than a tie for third place. With three matches remaining, they could they could clinch a CCAA Tournament berth as soon as next Friday.

MILTON ALONE IN SECOND… With his fifth shutout of 2022, Matthias Milton took sole possession of second place on the Otter single–season shutout list. They are the most by a an Otter keeper at the NCAA Division II level. Cristian Materazzi holds the Otter record of seven set during the 2002 season.

HIGH FIVE… CSUMB earned its fifth CCAA win of 2022 with Sunday's 1–0 shutout of Stanislaus State. That ranks No. 5 for CCAA wins in a season and are the most in an 11–game conference season. The Otter record for CCAA victories is nine (9–5–2) in 2013.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Javier Romero 1. ASSISTS: Colin O'Mahony 1. SHOTS: Janos Kömmerling 6. SAVES: Matthias Milton 3.

THE LAST WORD… "We felt like that's the best we have started a game this season. Our willingness to run, press and break lines made it very difficult for Stanislas to get into the game. We probably should have scored more goals during that time. The guys have worked very hard and I'm really proud of where they are at at this point in season. We are looking forward to a tough trip on the road next week." — CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to Arcata to begin a 2–match roadtrip at Cal Poly Humboldt on Friday (Oct. 21). Kickoff will be at 3 p.m.
