Otters Hang On For 2–1 Win Over East Bay

Villegas, Nigg score to help MB secure three valuable points

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay claimed the first two goals then needed to hang on late to defeat Cal State East Bay 2–1 Friday night at Cardinale Stadium.

Catalina Villegas (Clovis HS/UNLV) opened the Otter scoreline in the 36th minute with an upper right vee chip from the top of the box. Senior defender Linda Nigg (Oklahoma City/Deer Creek HS) added her first just before the hour mark when she headed home a Mitsy Ramirez (Richmond/UC-Colorado Springs).

From there, the Otters had to hang on as East Bay came alive over the balance of the second half, hitting the post once before halving the Otters lead on a Kelsey Peña goal in the 66th minute.

But senior goalkeeper Maleni Morales (Fremont/Las Positas College) came up clutch when it mattered to help CSUMB secure the spoils. Though credited with only two saves, she was active in the second half to help quell the Pioneer surge.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Linda Nigg cleared a ball from the Otter box as the final seconds ticked off the clock.

BATTLE OF THE BAYS… The Otters continue to own the upper hand in the Battle of the Bays, women's soccer edition. CSUMB improved to 12–9 all–time against Cal State East Bay, including an 8–3 record at home. The Otters have won five of the last seven in the series.

SPREADING THE WEALTH… The Otters continue to spread the offensive wealth with two new goal scorers in Friday's 2–1 win over Cal State East Bay. Catalina Villegas and Linda Nigg became the ninth and 10th Otters to score through 14 games in 2022.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Linda Nigg netted her first collegiate goal in Friday's 2–1 win over Cal State East Bay. Including her first two seasons — when she played at Southern Nazarene — Friday was Nigg's 55th collegiate cap.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Linda Nigg/Catalina Villegas 1; ASSISTS: Amelia McManus/Mitsy Ramirez 1; POINTS: Linda Nigg/Catalina Villegas 2; SHOTS: Amelia McManus/Mitsy Ramirez/Tiger Rendon 2; SAVES: Maleni Morales 2.

THE LAST WORD… "Conference games are always a battle and tonight was no different. While we had stretches of really great soccer, we never really found our rhythm in the second half. That being said, Linda and Cat scored great goals tonight and we were able to outlast East Bay. We got a valuable three points tonight." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their weekend homestand by hosting Stanislaus State for a CCAA doubleheader. The women will kickoff at 2 p.m. as the second match.
