Possession Pays Off As Otters Beat East Bay, 1-0

Julian Contreras’s late match-winner earns key points for Otter men

SEASIDE, Calif. — Sophomore foward Julian Contreras (Watsonville HS) played the role of hero Friday night in Cardinale Stadium, heading home a tic-tac-toe goal from the doorstep in the 88th minute to give Cal State Monterey Bay a 1–0 win over visiting Cal State East Bay.

The goal came almost from out of thin air following the quick restart of an Otter free kick just inside the offensive half. Colin O'Mahony (Cork, Ireland) drove a long, far post cross that found the head of Javier Romero (San Francisco/Marshall HS). That's when East Bay goalkeeper Zavier Hajdukovich, who had been brilliant to that point, made his one mistake.

Hajdukovich came far off his line trying to break up the O'Mahony service. When he could get to it, he left the goal exposed. Romero headed back across the goalmouth to to Contreras, who simply redirected it home for his first of the season.

The Otters controlled possession for much of the contest, but East Bay had chances on the counter. The best Pioneer threat came off a free kick five minutes after the restart when Peter Hawkin headed the service off the outside of the near post.

Sophomore goalkeeper Matthias Milton (Elk Grove/Jesuit HS) made the Contreras goal stand up, finishing with four saves for his third shutout in his last four outings.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… The Otters successfully defended and East Bay corner with just over 90 seconds remaining.

THE FINE NINE… Julian Contreras became the ninth different Otter (including an own goal) to score through the first 13 matches of 2022. Roberto Banegas leads the team with six markers.

MATTHIAS MOVIN' ON UP… By recording his fourth shutout of 2022 Friday night, Matthias Milton moved up to No. 2 on the CSUMB single-season list for shutouts. He matches the totals of Brendan Baca (2007 & 2009) and Evan Drake (2013). Cristian Materazzi owns the CSUMB record with seven shutouts in 2002.

HOME SWEET HOME… Cardinale Stadium, built by the Monterey Bay Football Club on the footprint of the former Freeman Stadium on campus, is proving to be quite the home field advantage for the Otters. CSUMB improved to 3–0–1 in the facility with Friday's win over East Bay.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Julian Contreras 1. ASSISTS: Colin O'Mahony/Javier Romero 1. POINTS: Julian Contreras 2. SHOTS: Eight Otters 1. SAVES: Matthias Milton 4.

THE LAST WORD… "We felt that we started the game very well; we pressed and caused them some problems. After that we dropped off and allowed them to get into the game. The second half we played much better and created some good chances and were unlucky not to score. Overall, we are really happy with getting back to basics in keeping clean sheets, and great to see Jules score his first goal of the season." — CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap
