Frankland’s Game–Winner Helps Otters Ring In 2022 In Style

Levi Frankland’s jumper with 2.5 seconds left lifts Otters over SFSU, 75–74

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey kicked off 2022 in style by taking a barn–burner from San Francisco State, 75–74, Sunday evening in The Kelp Bed. Junior Levi Frankland (Gold Coast, Queensland) played the role of hero, knocking down a pull–up jumper with 2.5 seconds to play for the win.

With the win, CSUMB improved to 6–3 overall and 5–1 in the CCAA. It's the Otters' best start in conference action since joining the CCAA for the 2004–05 season.

Frankland's winner capped the final rally in a game of rallies. SFSU led by as many as eight in the second half and the Otters led by as many as 10. It appeared as if the Gators had pulled off the final comeback, however, when they erased an 8–point CSUMB lead inside the final four minutes.

The Otters kept battling, however, until two missed Gator free throws in the final 35 seconds, the second coming on the front end of a one–and–one opportunity, left the door open.

Frankland stepped through that door twice, first sinking a pair on his own one–and–one to pull CSUMB to within 74–73 with 13 seconds remaining. Then, after Jacob Huynh missed the first of his opportunity, Frankland looked like he was going to the hole before pulling up and finding the bottom of the net to give the Otters the lead.

All that was left was for Tommy Kramer (Amador Valley HS) to steal the ensuing inbounds pass to seal the victory.

Jordan May (Troutdale, Ore.) led all scorers with 20 points. Noah Stapes (San Jose/St. Francis HS) added 15 while Frankland finished with 12. Junior Kyle Johnson (Point Loma HS) pulled down a game and career–high 14 rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Tommy Kramer stole the Gator inbound pass with 2.5 seconds remaining to run out the clock.

HOT START: With Sunday's win, CSUMB is 5–1 in CCAA play for the first time in its history. The 2004–05 Otters — CSUMB's first year in the CCAA — began 4–1 and finished 10–10. They did not earn a postseason bid, however, as they were in transition from NAIA to NCAA status at the time.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… Sunday's 75–74 win over San Francisco State — combined with a 76–64 win in The Swamp on Dec. 20 — completes CSUMB's first season sweep of the Gators since the 2008–09 season.

20–20 VISION… After leading CSUMB with 26 points in the Dec. 20 win at San Francisco State, senior guard Jordan May led to Otters with 20 points in Sunday's win 75–74 over the Gators. He is the first Otter to turn that trick since Damian Wilson went for 20 at Holy Names and 24 against Cal Poly Pomona on Nov. 19 and 23, 2019.

ON THE REBOUND… Kyle Johnson's 14 rebounds in Sunday's 75–74 win over San Francisco State are his career high, surpassing the 10 he grabbed at Fresno Pacific on Dec. 19, 2018. They are the most by any Otter since Andrew Ferguson also grabbed 14 against San Francisco State on Jan. 18, 2020.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jordan May 20; REBOUNDS: Kyle Johnson 14; ASSISTS: Jordan May 4; BLOCKS: J.R. Schilling 1; STEALS: Five Otters 1.

THE LAST WORD… "Once again, it wasn't pretty, but the mental and physical toughness of our guys allowed us to overcome it all and find a way to win. I'm incredibly proud of this team for sticking together through all the early ups and downs of the season." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head south for the challenging Cal State San Bernardino/Cal Poly Pomona trip this week. They'll kickoff the weekend with a doubleheader at No. 12 San Bernardino Thursday (Jan. 6). The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
