Otters Dominate Stat Sheet But Settle For Draw

CSUMB out–shoots Menlo College 19–6 in a scoreless tie

SEASIDE, Calif. — Despite a dominant performance on the stat sheet by the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team, an equally dominant effort by Menlo College goalkeeper Michelle Gonzalez forced the Otters to settle for a scoreless draw with the Oaks Monday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB (1–0–1 overall) out–shot Menlo (2–1–1) 19–6 for the match, including a 15–3 edge in regulation. But Gomez was equal to the task, making 14 stops—several in spectacular fashion—to keep her side in the game.

Gonzalez also got some help from the woodwork when a curling rocket from Maya Richardson (Sacramento/West Campus HS) rang the cross bar in the 80th minute.

Playing on the counter for most of the night, Menlo didn't test Otter goalkeepers Aubrey McKessy (Canyon Country/Canyon HS) or Maleni Morales (Fremont/Las Positas College). The Oaks put just one of their six shots on frame, and that came from distance, allowing Morales to make a routine stop.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Maleni Morales easily stopped a low effort from distance by Robyn Rowley in the 109th minute.

KEEP IT CLEAN… Including the 1–0 win over Cal State East Bay on Sept. 4, the Otters now have opened the season with consecutive shutouts for the first time in program history.

KEEP IT CLEAN, II… The Otters have recorded back–to–back shutouts for the first time since Sept. 14–16, 2019, when they beat Western Oregon 1–0 and tied Dominican 0–0.

HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT… Junior Jasmine Safarians matched her career high with a match–high five shots Monday against Menlo College. She equaled her mark set on Nov. 7, 2019 at Chico State.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: –; ASSISTS: –x; POINTS: –; SHOTS: Jasmine Safarians 5; SAVES: Maleni Morales 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to The City to face Academy of Art on Friday (Sept. 10) for a Noon kickoff at Paul Goode Field. CSUMB returns home to host Stanislaus State in a nonconference affair Sunday (Sept. 12).
