Another Dominating Effort, Another Scoreless Draw

Otters attempts a school–record 32 shots in draw at Academy of Art

SAN FRANCISCO — When the offensive breakout comes for the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team in 2021, it no doubt will be a sight to behold. For the third consecutive game, however, the Otters relied on a suffocating defense to earn a share of the spoils as a school–record 32 shots didn't translate into an Otter goal in a scoreless draw at Academy of Art Saturday afternoon at Paul Goode Field.

CSUMB (1–0–2 overall) posted its third consecutive shutout to open the season — a school record — but an avalanche of shots didn't net a goal for the second consecutive outing. The Otters out–shot ArtU 32–12 for the match, building advantages of 14–4 in the second half and 7–1 in the final overtime period. They called Urban Knight goalkeeper Nicole Peoples to action 13 times, but she answered each challenge to keep the Otters off the scoreboard.

Jasmine Safarians (Pleasant Hill/College Park HS) led seven Otters who took multiple shots Saturday with five attempts. Aubrey McKessy (Canyon Country/Canyon HS) and Maleni Morales (Fremont/Mission San Jose HS) split time in goal for the third match with McKessy making four saves and Morales one.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Nicole Peoples saved an Amelia McManus attempt with 12 seconds remaining in the final overtime period.

TAKING THEIR SHOT… CSUMB's 32 shots in Saturday's draw at Academy of Art set an Otter record for shots taken in a match. It broke the record of 28 shots taken in a win over UC Santa Cruz on October 22, 2016.

KEEP IT CLEAN… With Saturday's scoreless draw at Academy of Art, the Otters now have opened the season with three consecutive shutouts for the first time in program history. Prior to this season, the Otters had never opened with even two consecutive shutouts.

KEEP IT CLEAN, II… The Otters have recorded three consecutive shutouts for the first time sine they matched the school record with four in a row from Sept. 23–Oct. 4, 2018. CSUMB has posted four consecutive shouts three times (2003, 2017, 2018).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; SHOTS: Jasmine Safarians 5; SAVES: Aubrey McKessy 4.

THE LAST WORD… "The amount of offense the team continues to generate is promising. We will continue to focus on our composure which will give us the last piece to the puzzle." — CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters host Stanislaus State for a nonconference match Sunday (Sept. 12) at 2 p.m.
