Breakthrough Comes Just In Time To Help Otters Vanquish Stanislaus

CSUMB gets goals from Alexandra Diaz and Jasmine Safarians in 2–1 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay was creating so many chances on the young season that an offensive breakthrough was only a matter of time. As it turned out, Sunday was that time.

The Otters scored twice to upend Stanislaus 2–1 at the Otter Sports Complex in a rare nonconference game between the CCAA rivals.

The win lifts CSUMB's (2–0–2 overall) season–opening unbeaten streak to four games. Stanislaus fell to 2–2–0.

Sunday's match began with a familiar pattern of the Otter offense creating chances while protecting against opposing counters. Normally, that pattern resulted in plenty of CSUMB opportunities and tables scraps for its opponents.

But Stanislaus, being a level up in competition from CSUMB's early schedule, was able to unlock the CSUMB defense for the first time in 2021. Skyler Hoy maneuvered in tight space near the top left corner of the box before sneaking a shot just inside the near post to give the Warriors a 1–0 lead in the 13th minute.

Despite trailing for the first time this season, the Otters stuck to their game plan and reaped the rewards 15 minutes later when Alexandra Diaz's (Brentwood/Holy Names Univ.) long run and crafty shot beat Stanislaus goalkeeper Amanda Leal to the far said to tie the match.

CSUMB kept up the pressure — eventually building a 17–6 edge in shots — until the match–winner inevitably came. This time, it was Jasmine Safarians (Pleasant Hill/College Park HS) taking a short feed from Allexxis Hand (Hacienda Heights/Los Altos HS) then making a strong, darting run from which banged one in off the right post.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Freshman goalkeeper Aubrey McKessy stoned Daisy Martinez from close range in the 75th minute to deny Stanislaus its last scoring threat.

START ME UP… CSUMB is unbeaten after four matches for the second consecutive season (the 2019 Otters started a school–record 6–0–1). It marks the first time the Otters have ever started consecutive seasons on such a hot streak.

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END… CSUMB's shutout streak to open the season ended at a school–record 323 minutes when Stanislaus became the first team to score against the Otters in 2021.

MONICA MAKES HER POINT… A tip of the Otter cap goes out to senior defender Monica Hrncir, who notched her first collegiate point with an assist on Alexandra Diaz's goal.

THREE MORE FRIENDLIES… The Otters will play three more nonconference matches before the race for the CCAA crown begins on Oct. 1 with a rematch versus Stanislaus State in Turlock.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Alexandra Diaz/Jasmine Safarians 1; ASSISTS: Monica Hrncir/Allexxis Hand 1; POINTS: Alexandra Diaz/Jasmine Safarians 2; SHOTS: Jasmine Safarians 5; SAVES: Aubrey McKessy 3.

THE LAST WORD… "It was nice to score two beautiful goals today. After conceding, our team stayed the course and was able to answer with a goal each half and hang on at the end. Our offense is really starting to click. " – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue nonconference action Thursday when they host Pacific West Conference foe Holy Names University Thursday (Sept. 16) for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
