Record–Setting Night For Otters In 8–0 Win Over Holy Names

Amelia McManus nets a hat trick as Otters break record for goals in a match

SEASIDE, Calif. — Freshman Amelia McManus (Las Vegas/Faith Lutheran HS) recorded the second hat trick on program history, helping Cal State Monterey Bay set school records for goals and points in a match during the Otters' 8–0 win Pac West Conference rival Holy Names University Thursday night at the Otter Sorts Complex.

McManus joins Sierra Townsend as the only members of the Otter hat trick club. She scored twice just 86 second apart late in the first half then finished her trick by tapping in a sitter in the 88th minute.

This game was decided early when Alexandra Diaz (Brentwood/Heritage HS)—a transfer from Holy Names in 2019—opened the scoreline in the fourth minute. The Otters would go on to out-shoot Holy Names 31–1 for the match.

Joining McManus and Diaz in the Otter ledger were Concordia–Portland transfer Brenda Uribe, freshman Megan Roberts (Dublin HS), San Bernardino Valley College transfer Nayeli Sandoval Gallo and junior Sierra Levy (Lakewood/Mayfair HS).

Junior goalkeeper Maleni Morales (Fremont/Las Positas College) was barely tested in earning her first collegiate shutout.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Alexandra Diaz cleaned up a failed clearance in the Hawk box in the fourth minute. With the Otter defense in top form, Holy Names never came close to threatening that lead.

THROWING HER HAT IN THE RING… As stated earlier, Amelia McManus joined Sierra Townsend as the only players in Otter women's soccer history to record a hat trick with three goals in Thursday's 8–0 win over Holy Names. Townsend did it in a season–ending victory over Humboldt State on Oct. 30, 2014.

THE POINT IS SEVEN… In addition to tying the school record for goals in a match, Amelia McManus added and assist on Megan Roberts' goal to give her a school–record seven points on the night.

EIGHT IS MORE THAN ENOUGH… The eight goals scored by CSUMB in Thursday's win over Holy Names broke the school record of six set in wins over Saint Martin's (6–1 on Aug. 31, 2017) and Holy Names (6–0 on Sept. 6, 2017).

ALMOST SPOTLESS… The Otters have pitched four shutouts in their first five matches of 2021, allowing just a single goal over that span. The previous record for fewest goals allowed over any five–game stretch was two, set Sept. 5–16, 2019.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Amelia McManus 3; ASSISTS: Megan Roberts 2; POINTS: Amelia McManus 7; SHOTS: Sierra Levy 5; SAVES: Maleni Morales 1.

THE LAST WORD… "Our main goal for tonight was to find consistency in our attack and we accomplished that. The team has stayed hungry and focused through preseason and we continue to generate chances on goals. Every single one of our players have contributed to this mindset and I'm incredibly proud of them." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… CSUMB's scheduled match with Dominican on Sunday (Sept. 19) has been postponed. A makeup date has not been announced.
