Otters Dominate Then Hold On To Down East Bay 2–1

A 25–1 shot advantage nets goals from Ryan Anderson, Adrian Rebollar

SEASIDE, Calif. — A dominating performance by the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer finished a bit closer than Otter fans would have liked, but the home side still held on to claim a 2–1 nonconference victory over Cal State East Bay Sunday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB (1–0–1 overall) received beautiful goals from Ryan Anderson (Carlsbad/Mira Costa College) and Adrian Rebollar (Watsonville HS) to go up 2–0 just past the hour mark. At the time of Rebollar's goal, the Otters were out–shooting East Bay 18–0 and appeared to be comfortably in control.

Just when it seemed that the Otters would cruise to victory, East Bay pulled a goal out of thin air to make the final 17 minutes interesting. Pioneer senior Miles Ramos floated a cross from the left wing to the near post. Miscommunication by the CSUMB defense allowed Josh Gaeckle just enough space to float the ball past goalkeeper Adrian Muñoz to halve the Otter lead.

That proved to be the only shot East Bay would muster on this night as the Otters rode out the final 17 minutes without incident. CSUMB finished the game with a 25–1 advantage in shots and a 13–3 edge in corner kicks.

Pioneer goalkeeper Kelekolio Mateo made nine saves to keep his side in the match.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… the Otter defense easily dispatched a Pioneer free kick from the defensive side of midfield in the 89th minute.

CORNERING THE MARKET… CSUMB's positional advantage in the match shined brightly on the stat sheet in terms of a 13–3 edge in corner kicks. It marked the most corners by the Otters since they took a school–record 22 against Academy of Art on Sept. 1, 2018.

SPREADING THE WEALTH… The CSUMB attack came from multiple directions Sunday night against East Bay. Twelve different Otters attempted at least one of the team's 25 shots. Senior midfielder Adrian Rebollar led the way with four shots, including his first goal of 2021.

BATTLE OF THE BAYS, PREVIEW EDITION… For those keeping score at home, Sunday's match was not an official part of the Battle of the Bays competition between Cal States Monterey and East Bay. That friendly battle — in which the schools earn points with head–to–head victories in CCAA contests to win the Bay Bell — begins on Saturday, Sept. 18 when the Otter volleyball team heads to Hayward. The soccer edition of Battle of the Bays will take place on Sunday, Oct. 3 at Pioneer Field.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Ryan Anderson/Adrian Rebollar 1; ASSISTS: Colin O'Mahony 1; POINTS: Ryan Anderson/Adrian Rebollar 2; SHOTS: Adrian Rebollar 4; SAVES: None.

THE LAST WORD… "We were really happy with the first half performance and felt like we played some really good soccer. We are lacking a bit of a cutting edge, but that will come as we keep working and improving. Another really hard–working performance from the guys" – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will take eight days off before returning to action Tuesday (Sept. 14) with a nonconference match against William Jessup University. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Otter Sports Complex.
