Diaz Makes Otters Winner In Surprise Season Opener

Sophomore Alexandra Diaz’s 85th minute rocket lifts Otters of East Bay, 1-0

SEASIDE, Calif. — When smoke from the Northern California wildfires forced cancellation of Cal State East Bay's scheduled season–opener in Chico, the Pioneers and Cal State Monterey Bay arranged a last minute match for Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.
Sophomore forward Alexandra Diaz (Brentwood/Holy Names Univ.) rewarded the Otters for their hospitality with an 85th minute strike to lift CSUMB to a 1–0 victory.

The Battle of the Bays preview — this contest doesn't count in the yearlong rivalry between the schools — was an evenly played defensive affair from the opening whistle. The teams combined for just 11 total shots and just six shots on goal (three for each side).

A heads–up play by junior Jasmine Safarians (Pleasant Hill/College Park HS) changed that in a hurry. A quick restart following a Pioneer foul allowed Safarians to find Diaz streaking down the right wing. Diaz carried the ball to the top left corner of the box then blasted a rocket into the far side net that left East Bay goalkeeper Jordan Smith no chance.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Junior goalkeeper Maleni Morales (Fremont/Las Positas College) smothered a long shot attempt from Riley Spitzer in the 89th minute. It was the last shot of the match for either team.

FOR OPENERS… Saturday's 1–0 win over East Bay brings CSUMB's all–time record in season–opening games to 10–10–1 dating back to its inaugural campaign in 2000.

FOR (HOME) OPENERS… Saturday's 1–0 win over East Bay brings CSUMB's record in home openers to 12–8–1.

SHUTOUT KILLER… The last time the Otters posted a shutout was a 1–0 victory over Cal State L.A. on Oct. 25, 2019. The lone goal in the game came off the foot of (you guessed it) Alexandra Diaz.

SHARING IS CARING… Saturday's clean sheet goes down as a combined shutout for freshman Aubrey McKessy (Canyon Country/Canyon HS), who got the start, and junior Maleni Morales, who played the second half and got the win. It's CSUMB's first combo shutout since Stephanie Busch and Victoria Whyte combined to blank UC Santa Cruz on Sept. 27, 2018..

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Alexandra Diaz 1; ASSISTS: Jasmine Safarians 1; POINTS: Alexandra Diaz 2; SHOTS: Alexandra Diaz 3; SAVES: Maleni Morales 3.

THE LAST WORD… "What a feeling to be back out on the field again! This game was exactly what we needed. It was competitive, physical, and we really had to raise our speed of play in order to find the breakthrough goal. While it will take a few more games to really find out rhythm, it was a great result." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play what was originally scheduled as their season opener Monday (Sept. 6) when they host Menlo College for a nonconference affair. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
