Otters Yield A Pair Of Late Goals As Toros Rally For 3–2 Win

Alexandra Diaz, Sierra Levy score for CSUMB

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay couldn't hold onto a pair of leads, allowing visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills to rally twice to take a 3–2 win Saturday night at the Otter Sports Complex. The match was the final preconference tune up for both teams.

Alexandra Diaz (Brentwood/Heritage HS) opened the Otter scorline in the 20th minute by floating a short header over Dominguez Hills goalkeeper Ashley Correia. A penetrating run by Patricia Rubio-Martinez equalized for the Toros eight minutes later, sending the match to halftime tied 1–1.

With the match in a defensive stalemate, the Otters broke through with what looked like the match–winner in the 75th minute when Sierra Levy (Tulare Western HS) out–fought Correia to win a Brenda Uribe (East Palo Alto/Woodside Priory) through ball for an easy finish.

But Nia Thompson turned the match on its head barely two minutes later with an absolute rocket from 30 yards out to draw the Toros level again. Three minutes later, Thompson caught Otter goalkeeper Maleni Morales (Fremont/Mission San Jose HS) straying way off her line and chipped her for what proved to be the match winner.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Ashley Correia corralled a Caitlyn Ferguson attempt in the 90th minute.

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END… CSUMB saw its chance to open a season with a 6–match unbeaten streak for just the second time in program history end with Saturday's setback.

TAKING THEIR SHOTS… The Otters have out–shot their opponents in all six matches this season, including a 7–5 edge over Dominguez Hills Saturday night. CSUMB is out–shooting its foes a combined 113–34 so far in 2021.

GOAL PARADE… The Otters have now scored multiple goals in three consecutive matches: 2 vs. Stanislaus (Sept. 12); 8 vs. Holy Names (Sept. 16) and 2 vs. Dominguez Hills (Sept. 25). It marks the first time since the 2014 season the Otters have turned that trifecta. In case your wondering, the Otter record is five consecutive matches with multiple goals set from Oct. 2–16, 2002.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Alexandra Diaz/Sierra Levy 1; ASSISTS: Maya Richardson/Brenda Uribe 1; POINTS: Alexandra Diaz/Sierra Levy 2; SHOTS: Brenda Uribe 2; SAVES: Maleni Morales 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters begin CCAA play with a relatively local roadtrip when they travel to meet Stanislaus State Friday (Oct. 1) and Cal State East Bay Sunday (Oct. 3). CSUMB has already faced both teams this season, beating East Bay 1–0 on Sept. 4 and Stanislaus State 2–1 on Sept. 12.
