Otters Dominate But Draw In CCAA Opener At Stanislaus

Aubrey McKessy earns her first shutout; Brenda Uribe leads offense with six shots

TURLOCK, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay gave a strong performance but had to settle for a share of the spoils by playing Stanislaus State to a scoreless draw Friday night at Warrior Stadium. The match was the CCAA opener for both CSUMB (3–1–3) and Stanislaus (3–3–1).

As has been their M.O. all season, the Otters took the attack to the hosts, out–shooting the Warriors 19–10, including 3–0 in the overtime periods. But Stanislaus played an effective trap all evening, baiting the Otters into seven offside infractions.

Both teams managed eight corners in the match, but the dangerous chances all belonged to CSUMB. The Otter defense was so composed against the talented Stanislaus strikeforce that it called freshman goalkeeper Aubrey McKessy (Canyon Country/Canyon HS) into action just once over the 110 minutes.

Senior Brenda Uribe (East Palo Alto/Woodside Priory) led the Otter offense with six shot attempts.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Brenda Uribe had a shot blocked out for a corner in the 103rd minute. They proved to be the last shot and corner in the match for either team.

FOR (CCAA) OPENERS/FIT TO BE TIED… CSUMB is now 4–12–1 in CCAA openers dating back to their first season in the league in 2004. Not only is it the first time the Otters ever drew in the CCAA opener, it's their first draw in any league opener since the program began in 2000.

KEEP IT CLEAN… While she played the first half of three shutouts earlier this season, a tip of the hat goes to freshman goalkeeper Aubrey McKessy for earning her first official shutout as a collegiate keeper in Saturday scoreless draw at Stanislaus.

KEEP IT CLEAN, PART II… Friday's draw at Stanislaus marked CSUMB's fifth shutout in its first seven matches to start the 2021 season. By that metric, it's the best defensive start to a season in program history, beating the previous mark of four set by the 2017 and 2019 teams. It should be noted that Laura VanWart has been the head coach in each of those seasons.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Brenda Uribe 6; SAVES: Aubrey McKessy 1.

THE LAST WORD… "I am so proud of this gritty team tonight. We played a great opponent tonight in a tough environment and battled. While it is always good to get a point in the road, I think we were unlucky not to capitalize on our chances. But we continue to play beautiful soccer and create chances." – CSUMB Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will close their brief 2–match roadtrip with a Battle of the Bays Showdown at Cal State East Bay Sunday (Oct. 3). Kickoff will be at 1:30 p.m. as the closer of men's/women's doubleheader action.
