East Bay Quiets Otter Offense To Avenge Early Season Loss

CSUMB out–shoot East Bay 13–8 but drops a 2–0 decision

HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay's women's soccer team couldn't make it a season sweep of Cal State East Bay as the Pioneers avenged a season–opening loss in Seaside with a 2–0 win Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Stadium.

Although the Otters out–shot East Bay 13–8, the Pioneers got goal a in the 20th minute and a penalty kick in 51st minute and made them stand up. After the second goal, the Otters attempted four more shots, but only a 63rd minute effort by Mitsy Ramirez (Richmond/Making Waves Academy) really tested Pioneer goalkeeper Jordan Smith.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Maya Richardson sent the final Otter shot attempt wide in the 88th minute.

FEAST OR FAMINE… It's been feast of famine for the Otter offense this season. As a team, they've scored 11 goals in their three wins. In their other five matches (0–2–3), they've combined for just two goals.

TAKING THEIR SHOTS… Although goal scoring has been a rollercoaster, it hasn't been for a lack of shooting. Including a 13–8 shot advantage Sunday at East Bay, the Otters are out–shooting their opponents 145–52 for the season, averaging more than 18 shot attempts per match. CSUMB has out–shot its opponent in all eight matches to start the 2021 season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Jasmine Safarians 4; SAVES: Aubrey McKessy 5.

THE LAST WORD… ""East Bay was better than us in the keys moments today and it cost us. Moving forward, to be successful in the CCAA, we will have to be mentally tougher and willing and able to produce under pressure." — CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters begin a stretch of five home matches in their next six outings by hosting Chico State Friday (Oct. 8). The women will kickoff at 7 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
