Great Defense, Timely Offense Lead Otters Past Chico, 3–0

Goals by Villegas, Safarians and Ramirez support MB’s sixth shutout

SEASIDE, Calif. — Sophomore Catalina Villegas (Clovis HS/UNLV) scored her first collegiate goal and the staunch Cal State Monterey Bay defense ensured that would be plenty as the Otters took down in–form Chico State 3–0 Friday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

Villegas finished a quick build-up from Sierra Levy (Tulare Western HS) and Brenda Uribe (East Palo Alto/Woodside Priory) to find the upper left vee from 25 yards out in the 25th minute. With both teams playing excellent defense, that score looked to be all either team would find.

But a brilliant individual effort by Uribe helped the Otters to double their advantage eight minutes after the restart. Uribe beat her defender into the box from the right wing a fired a low bullet pass through the box. Wildcat goalkeeper Emma Hofmann had no choice but to try and disrupt the pass, but Uribe's ball simply had too much pace.

The ball eluded a diving Hofmann and Jasmine Safarians (Pleasant Hill/College Park HS) gave a sure finish for the 2–0 lead.

The Otters spent much of the last half hour absorbing Chico pressure until a counter produced a foul just outside the Chico box in the final minute. Mitsy Ramirez (Richmond/Making Waves Academy) took full advantage, curling home a pretty free kick to close the scoreline with 27 seconds remaining.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Jasmine Safarians finished a brilliant pass from Brenda Uribe to score her first goal of the season in the 54th minute, giving the Otters what proved to be an insurmountable 2–0 lead.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… Chico State's men's and women's programs have long ranked amongst to top teams not only in the CCAA, but in the West Region as well. Friday night, the Otters pulled off a men's/women's sweep of the Wildcats for the first time in program history. The Otter men beat Chico 1–0 in Friday's early match.

KEEP IT CLEAN… The Otters now have posted six shutouts in their first nine games, the best such 9–game streak in program history. In fact, the six clean sheets already tie for No. 4 in the Otter single–season record book. CSUMB set the school record with nine shutouts in 2018.

LENDING A HAND (OR FOOT)… Brenda Uribe became just the 10th player in Otter women's soccer history to pass two assists in a single game. Megan Roberts did it earlier this year in a win over Holy Names University. Jasmine Safarians also turned the trick in a win at Menlo College in 2019.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Mitsy Ramirez/Jasmine Safarians/Catalina Villegas 1; ASSISTS: Brenda Uribe 2; POINTS: Four Otters 2; SHOTS: Jasmine Safarians 3; SAVES: Aubrey McKessy 2.

THE LAST WORD… "It was a fantastic team effort tonight. The backs not only shut down talented attackers, but they were also able to break the Chico's pressure through their possession.  On top of that, to score beautiful goals against a top team was the moment we were waiting for. All of the pieces fell into place tonight. The players should be proud of themselves." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otter will conclude their weekend homestand by hosting Humboldt State for a doubleheader Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex. The men will kickoff at 11:30 a.m. and the women will kickoff at 2 p.m.
