Otters Make It A Weekend Sweep With 2–0 Win Over Humboldt

Second half strikes from McManus and Uribe secure the spoils

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay finished its strongest weekend of the season with a convincing 2–0 win over Humboldt State Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

Second-half beauties from Amelia McManus (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS) and Brenda Uribe (East Palo Alto/Woodside Priory) were all the support freshman goalkeeper Aubrey McKessy (Canyon Country/Canyon HS) needed to earn her third shutout in the last four matches.

Sunday's game began as a chess match with neither team attempting a shot in the first half. In fact, the first half stat sheet was blank save for one Otter corner kick and a handful of fouls.

Things heated up 10 minutes after the restart when a trio of Otters worked to win possession in the offensive right wing corner. Natalia Leroux Martinez/College Park HS) eventually found her way free and sent a far post cross to McManus, who headed powerfully back across the goal to open the Otter ledger.

The match remained a reasonably even affair for the next 20 minutes until the Otters finally put it away. This time Uribe, who had been sniffing at the goal all match, got free on the right side of the box to side-net her second of the season over Humboldt goalkeeper Alexis Aguilar, who could do nothing but watch the ball sail over her head.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Brenda Uribe buried one into the side net in the 75th minute to give CSUMB a 2–0 lead that wouldn't be threatened.

I KNOW THAT GIRL… Perhaps the least surprised person on the field to see Brenda Uribe score a beautiful goal was Humboldt State Head Coach Grant Landy. That's because Landy recruited Uribe to play for him at Concordia University–Portland. Both Uribe and Landy left the former NCAA Division II West Regional rival when Concordia closed its doors in 2020.

KEEP IT CLEAN… The Otters now have posted seven shutouts in their first 10 games, the best such 10–game streak in program history. In fact, the seven clean sheets already tie for No. 3 in the Otter single–season record book. CSUMB set the school record with nine shutouts in 2018.

MAKING A POINT… The Otters have managed points in seven of the first 10 games (5–2–3) for the second consecutive season. The 2019 Otters began their campaign 6–1–3. They mark the first two times in program history the Otters have enjoyed such a run of success in a 10–game stretch.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Amelia McManus/Brenda Uribe 1; ASSISTS: Natalia Leroux/Sierra Levy 1; POINTS: Amelia McManus/Brenda Uribe 2; SHOTS: Amelia McManus 3; SAVES: Aubrey McKessy 2.

THE LAST WORD… "Two world class goals and some great team adjustments in the second half led us to a win this afternoon. It feels wonderful to get two wins this weekend against tough opponents playing our style of soccer. The team should be proud of their performances." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to the other Bay area to take on San Francisco State Thursday (Oct. 14) for a women's/men's doubleheader. The women will kickoff in the early game at 12:30 p.m.
