Otters Rally Late To Tie Toros In Final Pre–CCAA Tuneup

Marcus Decouto’s second of the season ties it in 88th minute

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay got a late equalizer from Marcus Decouto (Turlock HS/UC Merced) but couldn't complete the total comeback, settling for a draw with Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

Decouto's goal came amidst mounting Otter pressure after Dominguez Hills went down a man in the 80th minute. David Aguilar drew the straight red when he pulled down Antonio Ordoñez (Vacaville HS) from behind to prevent a clear breakaway.

 
The Otters finally capitalized less than three minutes from time when Jordan Sime (Pasadena HS) delivered to Ordoñez in the box. A flick set Decouto up on the doorstep for his second of the season.

The Otters kept the pressure on in overtime. out–shooting the Toros 8–2 in the extra 20 minutes. Only stellar play by Dominguez Hills goalkeeper Dylan De Baldo stood between the Otter and certain victory as the junior made several big stops down the stretch.

 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Sulaiman Bah sent a ball harmlessly over the Otter cross bar with 23 seconds remaining in overtime for the last official shot of the match. .

KEEP IT CLEAN… At 4–0–2, the Otters are unbeaten after six matches for just the second time in program history…and both of those sizzling starts have come with Graeme Jaap at the helm. The 2019 squad own the record for the best start at 5–0–1. The Otters have never been unbeaten through seven matches in the program's 24–season history.

TAKING THEIR SHOTS… The Otters out–shot Dominguez Hills 19–11 for the match Saturday night. They have out–shot their opponents in six of seven matches this season for a total advantage of 101–35.

TAKING THEIR SHOTS, PART II… The Otters are averaging an impressive 16.8 shots per match so far in 2021. They failed to reach double–digits in shots just once, when they took six in a 3–1 win over Menlo College (Sept. 18).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters begin CCAA play with a relatively local roadtrip when they travel to meet Stanislaus State Friday (Oct. 1) and Cal State East Bay Sunday (Oct. 3). CSUMB has already faced both teams this season, playing Stanislaus to a scoreless draw on Sept. 2 before beating East Bay 2–1 on Sept. 5.
