Early Goals Prove Costly In 3–1 Loss At Stanislaus

Pedro Martinez scores but Otters fall in CCAA opener

TURLOCK, Calif. — A pair of defensive lapses allow Stanislaus State to take a quick early lead and visiting Cal State Monterey Bay couldn't fully close the gap in a 3–1 loss Friday evening at Warrior Stadium.

Adrian Yepez scored on a bouncing shot from well outside the box in the seventh minute and Miguel Galdamez doubled the Warrior lead after a turnover in the box 11 minutes later. CSUMB pulled one goal back on a Pedro Hernandez (Bay Point/Mount Diablo HS) tap-in from a beautiful build-up by Colin O'Mahony (Cork, Ireland) and George Aquino (Castroville/North Country HS) just before the hour mark, but that was as close as the Otters would get.

CSUMB out–shot Stanislaus 15–13 for the match, led by four from junior Miguel Guerrero (Redwood City/Sequoia HS). Otter goalkeeper Adrian Muñoz (Pasadena/Cathedral HS) made three saves.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Josh Santillan scored from outside the penalty area in the 87th minute to restore a 2–goal lead for Stanislaus.

NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY… As Robert Frost famously noted, all good things must end. Such is the case with CSUMB's 6–match unbeaten streak to open the season. The Otters were attempting to break the school record for the longest unbeaten streak to open the season set at six matches by the 2019 squad. It should be noted that the two best start in program history happened with Graeme Jaap at the helm.

FOUR OF A KIND… Pedro Hernandez matched his career high with his fourth goal of the season Friday at Stanislaus State. He also had four goals in 2019.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Pedro Hernandez 1; ASSISTS: George Aquino/Colin O'Mahony 1; POINTS: Pedro Hernandez 2; SHOTS: Miguel Guerrero 4; SAVES: Adrian Muñoz 3.

THE LAST WORD… "We did not start the game very well and conceded two early goals which makes it difficult to come back from in the CCAA. Second half felt more like us, we scored a good goal and took the game to them. We will regroup and get ready for Sundays game." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will close their brief 2–match roadtip with a Battle of the Bays Showdown at Cal State East Bay Sunday (Oct. 3). Kickoff will be at 11:30 a.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
