Otters Can’t Translate Shots Into Goals As East Bay Rallies

Pedro Hernandez scores in third minute, but Otters fall 2–1

HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay scored on its first shot of the day then couldn't get any of its next 19 attempts to the back of the net as Cal State East Bay rallied for a 2–1 upset Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Stadium.
Senior Pedro Hernandez (Bay Point/Mt. Diablo HS) scored for the second consecutive match to put CSUMB on top in the second minute. But a defensive lapse allowed three Pioneers to run umarked to the far post on a corner kick for an uncontested tap-in with one second remaining in the half.

The Otters continued to carry play in the second half before another defensive lapse sealed their fate. This time, East Bay got control of a goal kick at midfield and, after a quick build up, two Pioneers ran unmarked into the six yard box. Clayton Branco had only to side foot into the open net.

CSUMB out–shot East Bay 5–0 over the final 12 minutes, putting four of those on frame, but couldn't find the equalizer.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… The Pioneer defense blocked a last–gasp shot attempt by Miguel Guerrero with 13 seconds remaining.

TAKING HIS SHOT… By attempting seven shots Sunday at Cal State East Bay, Pedro Hernandez tied the CSUMB record for shots in a match. The mark was set seven times previously, last by both Ryan Anderson and Walmer Martinez against Academy of Art on Sept. 15, 2019.

TAKING THEIR SHOTS… The Otters out–shot East Bay 20–10 for the match Sunday afternoon. They have out–shot their opponents in eight of nine matches this season for a total advantage of 136–58.

MULTIPLE GOALS NOT THE NORM… By conceding three goals Friday at Stanislaus State and two more Sunday at Cal State East Bay, the Otters have allowed multiple goals in consecutive matches for the first time since Sept. 20–29, 2019.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Pedro Hernandez 1; ASSISTS: Ryan Anderson/Antonio Ordoñez 1; POINTS: Pedro Hernandez 2; SHOTS: Pedro Hernandez 7 (CSUMB record); SAVES: Adrian Muñoz 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters begin a stretch of five home matches in their next six outings by hosting Chico State Friday (Oct. 8). The men will kickoff at 4:30 p.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
