Early Goal, Big Saves Lead Otters Past Chico State

Pedro Hernandez scores in second minute as Otters win 1–0

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team bounced back into the win column in a big way with a key 1–0 shutout of Chico State Friday evening at the Otter Sports Complex.

Senior Pedro Hernandez (Bay Point/Mt. Diablo HS) scored his team–leading sixth goal of the season, heading home an Adrian Rebollar (Watsonville HS) corner kick in the second minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Adrian Muñoz (Pasadena/Cathedral HS) made that goal stand up with several big plays.

Much of Friday's match was played in the midfield. Although the teams combined for 16 corner kicks, both defenses proved able to parry the opportunities, other then the Hernandez goal.

The biggest defensive play of the match for either side came barely 10 minutes after Hernandez put the Otters on top when a long through ball brought Chico's leading scorer, Jacob Chong, in alone on Muñoz. The Otter keeper rose to the challenge, however, charging out for a big kick save to deny the Wildcats what proved to be their best scoring chance.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Adrian Muñoz saw Miles Rice's shot safely wide in the 86th minute. It was the last chance for either team.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… Chico State's men's and women's programs have long ranked amongst to top teams not only in the CCAA, but in the West Region as well. Friday night, the Otters pulled off a men's/women's sweep of the Wildcats for the first time in program history. The Otter women beat Chico 3–0 in Friday's late match.

SHOTS WERE AT A PREMIUM… The Otters and Wildcats combined to take just 12 shots in the match—nine for the Otters and three from the Wildcats—the lowest combined total of the season. They were the fewest total shots attempted in an Otter men's match since CSUMB and UCSD combined for just 10 shots on Sept. 29, 2019.

MOVIN' ON UP… Adrian Rebollar passed his 13th career assist on the Pedro Hernandez goal in Friday's win over Chico State. That gives Rebollar sole possession of fifth place on the Otter career assist list. He needs two more to tie Nate Torricelli and Nathan Northup for third place. Nic Torricelli set the CSUMB record with 22 career assists from 2002–05.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Pedro Hernandez 1; ASSISTS: Adrian Rebollar 1; POINTS: Pedro Hernandez 2; SHOTS: Adrian Rebollar 3; SAVES: Adrian Muñoz 2.

THE LAST WORD… "The guys were really excited to get playing again after last weekend. We felt that we started the game really well and worked very hard as a unit. The guys showed mature heads when the tackles were flying and did not react when we would have in years gone past." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otter will conclude their weekend homestand by hosting Humboldt State for a doubleheader Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex. The men will kickoff at 11:30 a.m. and the women will kickoff at 2 p.m.
