Shooting Gallery Nets Otters A 1–1 Draw With Humboldt

Pedro Hernandez’s seventh of the season is one of 25 Otter shots

SEASIDE, Calif. — A near–record 25 shots highlighted a dominating performance that netted the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team a 1–1 draw with Humboldt State Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB carried the play positionally and possessionally from the opening kickoff, only to find itself stymied again and again by Humboldt freshman goalkeeper Adrian Gallardo, who practically stood on his head making 11 saves to consistently tamp down Otter opportunities.

For a time it appeared as if Gallardo's heroics would carry the day when the Lumberjacks converted on a rare incursion into the attacking third to earn a corner kick on the waning second of the first half. Marco Silvera's cross found Christian Gonzalez, who headed home the first score of the match 14 seconds from halftime.

CSUMB ramped up the pressure in a second half that saw them out–shoot Humboldt 14–2 for the period. The pressure paid dividends in the 69th minute when Gallardo turned aside a wicked effort from Janos Kömmerling (Dusseldorf, Germany) at the post. This time, Antonio Ordoñez (Vacaville HS) was there to pounce on the rebound and head the ball across the goal mouth the Pedro Hernandez (Bay Point/Mt. Diablo HS), whose professional finish evened the match.

The Otters out–shot the Lumberjacks 6–2 over the final 42 minutes of regulation and overtime, but couldn't find the match–winner.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Adrian Gallardo denied a Marcus Decouto attempt with 27 seconds remaining in overtime to silence the final threat by either team.

FIRE WHEN READY… The Otters nearly broke the school record for shots in a match by peppering the Humboldt goal with 25 attempts Sunday afternoon. That mark ranks No. 3 all-time, trailing only the 28 they took against BYU–Hawaii in 2007 and the 26 they attempted against Academy of Art in 2019. It should be noted that the Otters also attempted 25 shots in a 2–1 win over Cal State East Bay on Sept. 5 this season.

CONNECT FOUR… Make it four matches in a row for Pedro Hernandez, who becomes just the third player in the NCAA era of CSUMB soccer (2004–present) to score goals in four consecutive matches. Otter hall of famer Kyle Satow first did it in 2005. Hernandez will look to tie the Otter record of five consecutive matches set by Servando Perez (Oct. 20–Nov. 3, 2013).

HERNANDEZ CRACKS THE TOP 10… Sunday's goal was the seventh of the season for Pedro Hernandez, who moves into the No. 9 spot on the Otter list for goals in a season. He shares that place with Luis Lopez (2019) and Adam Volodor (2016). Kyle Archibald owns the Otter record with 16 goals in 2003. Walmer Martinez owns the NCAA era record with 13 goals in 2019.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Pedro Hernandez 1; ASSISTS: Antonio Ordoñez 1; POINTS: Pedro Hernandez 2; SHOTS: Adrian Rebollar 7; SAVES: Adrian Muñoz 1.

THE LAST WORD … "The staff were really happy with the effort and teamwork that the guys produced. We keep creating chances and have a great attitude with how we play." — Graeme Jaap, CSUMB Head Coach

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to the other Bay area to take on San Francisco State Thursday (Oct. 14) for a women's/men's doubleheader. The men will kickoff in the late game at 3 p.m.
